Congratulations to Americans.
You made history.

You now have a leader with world credibility.
I had never seen so many people being mobilized as volunteers and if it will reflect the future, you have a bright future.

The first thing Obama might need to do is to work on the problem of world poverty to protect jobs in US.
Poverty makes foreign workers cheaper, and that causes jobs to go overseas.
The era of international aid is over. Such aid makes corrupted politicians in third world countries rich.
So it is not with additional govt deficit that it will take place.
It wil require a strong diplomatic action, so local politicians of poor countries do their job, instead of being lazy, and spend money to live like kings in the middle of starvation.

World poverty makes US workers less competitive in a globalized job market.

Reduction of poverty imply the creation of root development programs. Poor need a job. That's all. US congress funded InterAmerican Foundation in the past. The lessons of that are contained in a report called "Crecimiento y transformación" that they published with the lessons of 20 years of such root development program.

Let's hope Obama has too much to do in the next day for reading this advice. :P

Poverty outside the USA is not the most severe problem... the USA is full of poverty itself, which is also damaging the economy.

Oh yeah, for sure Obama will come here to read...
Poverty outside US increases poverty inside, as jobs go overseas.
So basically US poor and unemployed subsidize third world politicians who live like kings while surrounded by starvation.

We all dream about having golf courts for everyone. But the truth is: Some will need to be green keepers.

You have many rich countries with poor people. Mostly by structures which give people no chance to gain wealth. And Obama can't solve this problem and it should not be expected from him. Get your own Obama for Costa Rica and elect him.

Unless... ROBOTS! :speakcool:

WALL-E, bring me my hoverchair.

First of all, president-elect Obama is going to be President of the United States, not Head of the White Council or King of Gondor and Arnor. He'll be hard-pressed to fix some stuff in the US in the time he will have, which is not going to be much even if he gets two terms (and why not). He cannot fix the world unless someone gets him a Ring of Power. We wish him all the best but there's only so much one man can do even as chief exec of the US.
Then... World credibility? Who decides it? He's not been tested yet. We'll see in a couple of years what he's got. I expect his honeymoon with Europe to be over as soon as Europeans realize that, after all, he won't be asking the EU for advice on which socks he should put on in the morning and that he is still the leader of a superpower, and will behave as such. :)

Wealth can be distributed via jobs. There are other mechanisms, but the one that could reach a biggest amount of people is employment. Accepting that poverty is natural is a good way not to find a solution to it.

As for Costa Rica - Unfortunately we have lazy bastards who nominate for congress.
Oscar Arias has done a good job but those bastards have stopped and blocked everything, in a stupid war of egos.
Next possible candidate could be Laura Chinchilla who was good vicepresident. But she needs to win internal party elections.

Expresident Calderon is facing a legal case for fraud and he plans to nominate as presidential candidate for 2010.

What I envy from US is that a lazy bastard would soon be rejected, while here in Latin America lazy bastards are very common.

No, but poverty is a result of an economic process, which even Obama can't stop. A single worker can produce much more products per day, as he can buy. You need less workers every years for producing the same amount of products and you can't employ more, as people don't buy more of your products. Even worse: if you reduce the number of workers, and these stay unemployed, this often means that you have less people buying your products - a vicious circle.

Now, the problem is: How to break the circle? Welfare? Will only accelerate the process. Poverty? Will also accelerate the process. In this dimension, you can't solve the problem, you need to find a new one. And I don't know any new dimension yet.

The historical answer would be massive wars.

We could always go to war with aliens. That was Ozymandias' plan.

Right,
I volunteer to lead a task force to the Sombrero galaxy where we will conquer all!!

buahh ha hah ahah

anyone know how long it would take to get there?

edit; sorry off topic :)

Perhaps the biggest challenge (and my concern) in the preservation of jobs that US will have, is that when it is a time to be a patriot and keep americans with jobs, and decide on cold numbers about downsizing, patriotism might become secondary. So sacrifices will get worse in US because lack of patriotism in business matters.

you do relize that bush is still president until january 2009.

right now obama is still waiting to be prez

Whatever. He won't be able to enact half of the policies he's been preaching for the last two years, and by the end of his first term the large majority of the people who voted for him will hate him as a president. But that's American "democracy" to you.

In the meanwhile, you can start learning your new anthem.

Doesn't matter unless you run out of tacos.

Great, I'll grab my stuff!

Bring lots of tacos :)

Yeah Obama doesn't have direct control over the gov yet, and the electoral college still have to vote him in. But chances that the electoral college will overturn the results are very slim.
