The proof of concept reinforces what's already been predicted at this point. That being said, if there were a practical way found to make these molecules, I'm sure that someone smart will come up with something interesting to do with them.

What are these molecules and what do they do? And why were they made?

These molecules are very unstable consisting of two Rubidium atoms where one is in a very special state called "Rydberg atom" and as far as I know... they do nothing except falling apart practically in an instant :lol:
But like Epsilon said: the interesting thing about them is, that the existence or rather the possibility of their existence was predicted long before they were produced in a lab... so its more a confirmation of a thesis then a usable achievement ^^
