Widescreen Monitors and "side" Panels

So I am not complaining, I love this thing and I love having a Wide-Screen monitor for gaming, but is there anyway to change how the "non-main" panels show the exterior space on either side vs just some blank grey, etc, Sort of kills the illusion aspect of it. I didn't know if I was maybe missing a setting somewhere, or it is what it is and just wanted to make sure.
