I mark the era you grew up in by the rock concerts you've attended.
If you grew up in the 70s, you saw Pink FLoyd, Bad Company, Black Sabbath, and Rush. You taught yourself how to play guitar.
If you grew up in the 80s, you saw "hair bands" (which weren't called that until much later), various heavy metal bands, REM, Violent Femmes, and Rush. You wore ridiculous hair. You taught yourself how to play guitar or synth, and you bought your first computer.
If you grew up in the 90s, you saw awful grunge bands like Nirvana and Collective Soul and Creed, and some good grunge bands like Alice in Chains. You also listened to The Cranberries and Portishead and such. Also, Tool, best band of the decade. And you may have seen Rush. You wore flannel shirts or long dresses with combat boots. You bought a guitar, but were too cool to play it because Nirvana didn't bother to learn how to play, why should you?
If you grew up in the 2000s, you saw Linkin Park, Chevelle, and comebacks by Ozzy, Metallica, etc. You also may have seen Rush. You didn't buy a guitar, you sat at home and played faux guitar on your video game console. You wear trendy North Face stuff and your teacher makes you take psychotropic drugs when you act up. The government reads your email, there are cameras everywhere watching you in public, and you are hoping that when you grow up there is no draft so they won't send you off to another war. You have a cellphone so cool they couldn't even dream it up on Star Trek.
If you grow up in the 2010s, you may take part in a giant hippy movement to end the war, go to a giant Woodstock-like concert, participate in free love nonsense, and start this cycle all over again.
And you may still be going to see Rush.
