Definately what we need, an active craft that we can radio to to track an object more accurately from passive observations. Let's hope, the technology is small enough and easy enough to build so it can be launched on a moment's notice.
That's the big flaw with any current proposed asteroid tracking/interception systems, the current plans call for them to be launched months, years, or even decades ahead of time. If we can intercept something within a short amount of time, then all the better.
