Just saw this when viewing the downed UAV article in another thread.
Evidently, this just happened a few hours ago.

Virginia Tech said on its website: "Shortly after noon today, a Virginia Tech police officer stopped a vehicle on campus during a routine traffic stop in the Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall.
"During the traffic stop, the officer was shot and killed. There were witnesses to this shooting.
"Witnesses reported to police the shooter fled on foot heading toward the Cage, a parking lot near Duck Pond Drive. At that parking lot, a second person was found. That person is also deceased."

What is it with this country and college shootings? Still, on the news the Penn State boy rapist is let free. Its just a messed up world :(

Unforunately it is... Even worse that Virginia Tech already had a massacre in 2007.
However, this news isn't as significant in my opinion. Homicide happens in all major cities, and two killings just isn't that uncommon, just unfortunate.
And I don't believe anything can be said against their increased security measures. It was a routine stop gone wrong. I don't know what policy they have on weapons though, or how the suspect obtained the weapon.

If it's like MTSU its very strict. No guns on campus. Period.

What kind of a thing may provoke someone to shoot an officer who stopped him?
Just, what does he hope for? To get away with it?
Does not sound like a big nothing-to-loose criminal was involved.

Just like the fools who speed to evade a ticket, and then crash.

You could have paid $150 for the speeding ticket, but no, you evade police, recklessly endanger lives, and cause chaos in the streets, and now your $150 misdemeanor is turned into jail time.

I swear, most people are idiots.

Killing two people is going to get you more than jail time...

This is what I mean, shoot the cop, you go to jail, you get stopped, you walk away with a small fine.

More cops get killed performing traffic stops than during ANY other activity except domestic disturbance calls. In other words, more cops die over a traffic stop than do responding to armed robbery calls, etc.

You never really know what you are getting yourself into with a traffic stop. I remember back when I was an MP the guy I roomed with got woken up - he had worked patrol the night before - and asked a bunch of questions about a guy he had written a ticket to (broken tail light). My buddy thought it was just another routine stop, but we found out later that the guy had just killed his wife and still had her body in the trunk when he got pulled over!

When you pull someone over, they could have a big bag of meth, or have warrants, or just have killed someone, etc. Yet cops pull people over several times each day without incident, so they get a bit complacent.

Sadly, this kind of thing occurs all the time. The only reason this particular event made national news is because of the shootings in '07 - even though this incident is completely un-related.
