Discussion Trees for Orbiter

But you see something like this for leaves in Orbiter 2016, isn't it?:
Yes, but the mesh is also rather sub-optimal, there is a lot of excess transparency, the mesh and UV map could be much tighter to the texture. Also if seperated into more groups and stacked with sort order then only the bottom ones will be problematic, taking into account that one is (hopefully) not flying below tree level in Orbiter very often this is probably an acceptable comprimise.
I quickly drew this textures in Blender
Never tried that, doesn't look to bad? How do you export? Since my gfx tablet doesn't work with my "new" pc I've been a little shy of texturing, do you paint with the mouse?
It looks like that white halo is related to the "FLAG 0x20"
I think maybe this should be posted in the Openorbiter thread?

Thanks for the explanations.

I think it could look pretty nice if you are an artist (I'm not). Just to clarify I mean painting in the "Texture Paint" mode integrated into Blender. It's not very multifunctional, but it has masks and you can use an outer texture like a stencil and paint it. I just save an image in Blender and convert it to DDS. There's no problem with exporting. I have a graphics tablet, but there's an option for smooth drawing with a mouse.

Thanks, I'll do it in the corresponding thread and GitHub.

Fir tree without (left) and with (right) normal maps.

Looks like normal maps aren't required for such objects.

Looks like generated textures (left) look better than I painted myself (right):

The tree has 15 224 vertices and 16 472 triangles. That's too much for the forest, but not so much to place several such the trees on a base:

Maybe it would look better with more leaves...

Now I can stop with my tree experiments. There're 16 trees (some of them differ only in texture):

Next I need to model some buildings and vessels.
