Here's a presentation recently made about a DARPA program called VULCAN aimed at developing an engine that works in the "trans-hypersonic" range (i.e. above what a turbojet can do, up through scramjet ignition speeds):

I have not read the presentation, but perhaps they are referring to pulse detonation engines instead?
