While looking through the addon repositories I noticed a lack of custom UMmus, so I decided to create some.

This is my first real project. I've decided to model a science fiction version of the Coast Guard, the Terran Space Guard, and model it after the USCG, in later releases I might add others based off of other countries' Coast Guards, and maybe add some Navies.

So far I have an XR2 and an XR5 repaint, and four UMmus completed. I'm planning on 24 UMmus total.

Unfortunately, I'm having a bit of trouble creating a face completely from scratch, I cant seem to figure out how to make a convincingly realistic face, and then how to add UVs to the model afterward. The first 4 UMmus used the default UMmus as a foundation (but they are edited and don't even resemble the originals anymore). does anyone know how to model a face and UV it, I'm trying to keep the UV layout the same as the original.

Cool, I'd love to see more custom UMMUs.

Would you be willing to do some soldier-themed suit models? Always wanted UMMU space marines.

I wasn't going to, but I just thought, that would solve a problem with creating a separate Assault/Rescue UMmu.

Imperial Stormtroopers.

I just tossed this model together. A few parts are giving me trouble:compbash2:, mostly smoothing out the vertices, and emphasizing others.

I think I'll use something similar, just show a bit more of the face, at least for the Space Guards.

On another note, does anyone know the average number of ribbons each rank of USCG officer has (I don't know how many to give my guys), and what medals would be expected to be found on them?

I don't know about the Officer corp of the Coasties, I went to High School with a friend who's on operations now down in the Gulf region. From both of our point of view, enlisted guys get more ribbons (after 10 years Navy I have 15), he has 11.

Most of the active duty officers I worked around had less than I did (mostly the junior officers O-3 and below), as they went higher in rank structure some earned more, and some didn't but did receive a few that had higher precedence (Legion of Merit was pretty common among commanders and above.

Every time we switched from summer to winter clothing somebody decided that we needed a uniform inspection. So here we all are in 1989 or so, decked out in our dress blues (AKA Cracker-Jacks), and the junior officer tasked with inspecting us (with his lone National Defense ribbon) had the nerve to ask the Vietnam-era 1st class Petty Officer next to me "When do you plan on replacing all those ratty looking ribbons". To which AT1 replied "Mmm, 'bout the same time you start earnin' some, (long pause) Sir."
To his credit our AT1 (avionics technician, 1st class) had more than 18, we often joked that he had the "see other side" ribbon. It was an impressive display of salad.

SO, to answer your original question, say maybe between 4 and 9 depending upon rank and time of service (but normally beat out by senior enlisted).

Not a word was said about AT1's response during the inspection, the lesson to the JO was never ask a question when you really don't want to hear the answer.

I LOVE the XR5 Skin, and have been meaning to ask for a USCG-themed one. Can you share it?

I had to compress it so it would fit

Edit: I just noticed that the file format was incompatable with the default client (it works with the other clients though). I've resaved the texture in a compatable format.

Made using the [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=5043"]XR5 REPAINT KIT[/ame] by Pennyblack (I think)

You just need to go into Textures\XR5Vanguard\Skins\ and create a new folder like XR5TSG or something (no spaces and there is a character limit of 8) and put the contents in there, then edit a scenario file and add skin XR5TSG or whatever you named the folder.

I've finally made my first head completely from scratch.:woohoo:
It doesn't look great, but its a first.

1060 vertices, 987 faces

F A B (Eff Aye Bee). That's the XR-5 Vanguard, when I was a noob I thought it was like flying a school bus, but it gets easier with practice. It's a big download, but the XR-fleet is well worth it.

Project Update

Here's the list of UMmus I've finished.
Vice Admiral, Rear Admiral, Commander, Lieutenant, Lieutenant JG, and Ensign

I've still got the Lower Rear Admiral, Captain, and Lieutenant Commander, and maybe more work for the Lieutenant, to finish the Commissioned Officers, then on to the Enlisted.

IIRC, there is a 3 character limit on the title for the UMmus, so I've used their pay-grade code to identify rank.

Here are the ribbons I've given them

I've still got to figure out how to UV a head from scratch, so these ones are still using DanSteph's meshes as foundation (I've got to ask him if he minds, or I'll remake them once I've got how to UV my own)

Your "O3" and "O5" ribbons seem to be pretty much what I've seen from past experience (and observation). What'd dude do to get the CMH?

If you want to add some detail to the ground-pounders ribbons, don't forget the "Aviation Warfare Specialist" wings. When I got out they were starting to make it all but mandatory for people to enroll in the program.

CMH Story

I've been trying to make a backstory for the characters before I model them to make fine details, but I've been having trouble making more for the other guys.

the Rear Admiral's story as to earning the Medal of Honor:
During the First Pirate War, intel indicated that a band of heavily armed pirates were going to attack a Lunar city, and the TSG had a ship close enough to be dispatched to the city, although sufficient forces to hold the city was a few days too far away. The TSG Commander (now Rear Admiral) made fortifications while simultaneously evacuating the populace. During the evacuation, the pirates attacked with full force, against a single group of TSG officers and a few militia, but she held her ground until the civilian ships were away. During the fight, a sniper took a shot at her, luckily she raised her rifle to look through the scope at the same time, and the bullet shattered her scope. The shards from the scope sliced through her helmet and face, but she refused to pull back until the civilians had evacuated. She continued to fight, even though actually hitting a target without a scope was futile. When word of the last transport had evacuated, she ordered a retreat, and successfully pulled back without loosing anyone.

I'm not much of a writer, but that's what I came up with.

O5 and O3 were inspired by the JAG tv series (Sturges & Harm)

Helmet Mk1

What do you think of my first try for a helmet? It still needs a texture and some details though.

(the Command Master Chief has an artificial eye)

I've also successfully made 2 people from scratch (O4 and E7*):jiggy:

* I've had to rearrange the ranks of the enlisted to fit into the 3 character limit, the seamen are S1 to S3, and the petty officers are arranged with individual codes with petty officer 3rd class being E1 and MCPOSG (MCPOCG) E9.
