Alright im not sure weather to post this, given that im not sure it happened myself but.. anyone had any strange possibly spooky moments in orbiter? I realise its a rather professional simulation thus void of such things.. anyway heres my story

ive been setting up orbiter and leaving the computer on while I sleep in my room.. the ambience of the ships life support systems, random sounds and suchlike soffen into some kind of melody in the background along with the rather pretty view of whatever planet im orbiting or heading for it makes for a calming scene to goto sleep too

except lastnight!
I decided to fly the shuttle from mars.. unrealistic in itself.. the default boring less than inspiring atlantis, after failing to take off manually from the ground (engines not powerful enough) and not wishing to park on mars for the night... I wouldnt be able to sleep... yes yes.. blame war of the worlds for that one...

I used the scenario editor to have the shuttle in orbit of mars more or less,
but didnt feel all that comfortable about having mars looking at me while I slept.. so I deorbited and cast off somewhere.. nowhere.. just anywhere other than mars.. left the engines on and went to sleep.. i woke up a little later.. needless to say the shuttles engines ran out of fuel and RCS was dead too.. she gotten herself into a slight forward tumble and for all realistic purpaces was far from home.. cold .. dead and alone.. alas the nice sounds dont stop so I simply turned off the HUD ladder and resumed my sleep..

sometime in the AM hours of the morning I woke up hearing what sounded like the proximity alarm.. the docking beep.. faint.. slow.. and intermitent.. that scene from alien actually came to mind with the motion detector..

thought it was just me dreaming so I ignored it.. then woke up again hearing it.. I was too tired to get out of bed so I left it.. it happened more than 3 times and I swore it got quicker.. and louder.. as it does when you try docking with something.. or when you jetison the fuel tank etc...

at that point orbiter stopped being calming and relaxing to sleep too and had my mind playing a half asleep debate about how orbiter is rather on the realistic side, im far away from anything.. mars was little more than a red dot.. no moons around.. and yet.. I could have sworn I heard the proximity radar beep.. in what should have been.. black empty and null space.. with a dead .. tumbling spaceshuttle floating helplessly ... at that point.. I actually got out of bed and turned it off :(

so I could sleep...

dream.. dunno.. proberly.. but it was damn spooky and you know im not putting on orbiter tonight

:welcome: to the forum!

Strange things happen to you. Maybe it was the giant space squid? Or the probe checking out the stray shuttle...

Thankyou for your warm welcome.. and yeah.. wasnt trying to be funny :) hmm although in retrospect proberly better to say maybe I was.. thanks anyway

If you heard it multiple times during the night then either it was a dream, or else the external tank was floating close by. It would be the only object on anything close to the trajectory of the shuttle.

Phobos? Deimos?

Mars, it's moons and Jupiter (don't forget the strange looking Io!) are spooky to me.

wow, scary... also when I finished reading the paragraph where the beeping started, thought your shuttle was slowly approaching the ISS back on earth and your shuttle was getting ready to dock to it by itself

Did you have a payload in the shuttle? I flew a Shuttle (STS-120 using Shuttle Fleet 4.01) from Mars to Earth once (and docked with ISS with almost no OMS fuel left! arrived at Earth in a highly elliptical orbit and used lots of aerobraking) and I heard the same thing once on the way. I accidentally jettisoned the payload without realizing it.

Check your Radar logs.... see if it detected anything with the dimensions of 1X3X5

That's what happens when you try to go anywhere but the earths orbit with the shuttle. Creepy:blink:
