So, what exactly does a soundpack do? I can probably figure out how to tune my radio frequency (havent tried yet but I'll RTFM  ), but is it recommended for greater realism? Can I make my own?

Soundpacks are recorded ATC chatter. You can actualy get the soundpack for a specific mission and then fly it with the original radio communications running in the background.
And you can make your own, should be very easy, although I haven't done it myself.

Thanks. Can you determine which sounds come on when, or is it random? Also, can you control the time interval at which successive sounds are played?

Sound packs certainly enhance immersion. I haven't made one before but I have certainly enjoyed them. Have a look at some of the ones on OrbitHangar for ideas on how to configure them. Some addons have special sound support (eg, AMSO) so you may want to look at their docs also.

Yes, take a look at the Docs that come with Orbiter Sound. I have made a prelaunch sound file for the shuttles recorded off of NASA TV. It's pretty easy once you read the docs.

I am going to do an STS-126 soundpack (I've never done one before either):)
