Recently I have had several system lockups which may be related to GPU driver failure. Some have happened while playing Orbiter and others while watching YouTube videos on Google Chrome. A message popped up during one or two lockups saying the graphics drivers had stopped responding. Other times no message appeared but similar symptoms were exhibited. I tried updating my graphics drivers but it didn't fix the problem. I also noticed that my GPU temperature is recorded at around 50 degrees C even when there is no GPU activity. Is this normal for my GPU model? (I have an ATI Radeon HD 5570). My computer/CPU fan has also been acting up lately (whenever there's any CPU usage my computer sounds like a jet engine). If my fan is dying could that be causing my GPU or CPU to overheat?

Check if all fans are actually running and are free from dust etc.
This is definitely the easiest check you can make and it should be done on a regular basis anyway.

All fans appear to be functioning and the CPU fan is mostly free of dust. The GPU and PSU fans were fairly dusty, however, so I cleaned them off. The GPU temp is down to around 48 degrees C. I can't seem to find what the nominal temperature is for my GPU but I would guess it's less than this.

Tj MAX can sometimes be 115C in newer chips. And temp indicators on cards and boards are usually +/- 10 C to begin with.

I'd say 40 to 50 C is probably ok.

I found this temp graph in which your card is listed;

You need to determine the ambient temperature for it to make any sense, and then compare the delta to the benchmark.

Ha! Don't kid yourself! GPUs are pigs!
