Even if it means spending a day making a program to do what would have been a minute of manual work.

Is that due to problems with the computer systems or a lack of supporting documentation?

What I'm finding is that most of those four hours you talk about are often down to people NOT DOCUMENTING things or documenting them in such a haphazard way that no documentation is better.

The amount of times people have said to me 'The documentation is here but ignore it as it's out of date' is so high that I just despair.

Haven't been in this thread in a while, and just noticed the Silmarillion discussion.

My mom said she didn't like it: to her, the writing seemed bloated and pretentious, and the whole thing felt cold, just utterly lacking the charm of The Hobbit, or even the Fellowship of the Ring.

Personally, I love the Silmarillion. It's very deep and detailed, answered many of my questions about Tolkien's world (What lies beyond Rhun? Is the "West" that the Elves go to on this planet or in some other dimension?), and has some of the most beautiful imagery I've ever read.

I particularly liked the passage at the end of Quenta Silmarillion, about what happened to the mariners lost at sea, who accidentally found the Straight Way and sailed to Aman. Just lovely:thumbup:

That's nothing new. I'm fairly certain that most of the early OS's for the x86 were done exclusively in assembly. Now, among 32-bit x86 OS's, that's probably fairly close to unique.

My brother wants to go into that line of work, at least for a while. It's not really fair to call him insane, though. It's something not many people want to do, and it sometimes pays quite well.
