I am struggling with frustration at my own recent realization of the complete and total inadequacy of a junior college education. Years of my life, as well as many dollars spent that I cannot get back for a degree in programming that did not in any way prepare me for current tools or technologies. The most frustrating part is that the skills I have learned as of late have all been built on things I had learned on my own prior to going back to school. Now I am being challenged to know, or learn quickly, things that should be expected of someone with a degree in programming, and I find myself unable to compensate for the level of difficulty.

Hm, in my case the education was centred on providing the thinking framework and problem solving skills.
We tried every odd technique and language from machine codes to object oriented design, along detailed mathematics.

And still, most of what i knew after it was what i learned myself in free time, amplified by what they taught.

How was it at your place?

I've gotten some pretty harsh reactions when making my same statements to colleagues, and you hit the nail on the head. I feel the majority of my coursework was working through chapters in a book and as such I feel like I missed out on some foundational skills that some of my colleagues who went to larger universities received. Some of my instructors had little or no experience with the languages being taught, let alone sharing techniques which would translate well into other tools and technologies. I feel this has hindered in many ways my ability to adapt.

Made a rocket engine in Inventor. Now I need to get it into a .3ds file or something to port it to KSP/Orbiter (I'll need to finish the tank for it to be ported to orbiter)

P.S. Why are CAD programs so easy, but modeling ones so hard?

No matter how good or bad a teacher is, the responsibility rests solely on the student. If he rests, even the best teachers are worth nothing.

After a good talk with my supervisor this afternoon, and a visit from a friend this evening who is also a programmer for a different company, I'm feeling much better about the situation. Sorry for the ramblings in my previous post. Just trying to figure out my piece of this giant puzzle.

After trying it for the first time today, German Bratwurst is my new favorite food.

It is indeed!
You will be happy to know that there are about a million variations. And they are all delicious! (This opinion does not include vegetarian pseudowurst)

Since there is no Flight Simulator screenshot thread here, here are a few FS2002 pics.
