This is the 1st commercial mission of the year for ILS and the 92nd ILS Proton mission since the first commercial flight of the Proton in April 1996.

This is the 11th Eutelsat satellite launched with Proton and the 21st Airbus-built satellite launched on Proton.

Mission Summary
Astrium has been selected in October 2011 by Eutelsat Communications to build Eutelsat 9B, a high-power broadcast satellite addressing high-growth video markets in Europe, to be launched at the end of 2014 and located at Eutelsat’s 9°E video neighbourhood.

Over its 15-year mission lifetime, EUTELSAT 9B will operate up to 66 Ku-band transponders connected to a broad European widebeam and four regional beams over European countries. It will increase Eutelsat’s capacity for video services in Europe, providing wide coverage for channels seeking maximum reach into satellite homes and terrestrial headends, as well as regional footprints addressing linguistic markets for digital TV in Italy, Germany, Greece and the Nordic/Baltic regions.

In addition to its broadcast mission, EUTELSAT 9B will host the EDRS A data relay payload for the European Data Relay Satellite System being implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between Astrium and ESA. The EDRS system of telecommunications satellites in geostationary orbit will enable very high data rate, bi-directional data relay communications between Low Earth Orbit Earth observation satellites and an associated ground segment.

Eutelsat 9B/EDRS-A Ascent Profile
The Proton-M first three stages place the orbital unit (OU), which consists of a Breeze-M upper stage, adapter system and Turksat 4B, into a 51.5° inclination suborbital trajectory.

Proton-M powered flight lasts 582 seconds. The OU powered flight begins at the moment of the third stage separation.

Immediately after the separation of the third stage booster, the Breeze-M stability engines start, damping the angular velocities of the third stage separation and then providing orbital unit orientation and stability during coast flight along a suborbital trajectory to await the first burn. The upper stage follows a five-burn injection profile.

Details:

The bright trace is created by the combustion of the second-stage rocket and the two faint traces originate from the fairing wings as the “Proton-M” put the French communication satellite “Eutelsat 9B” into orbit from from Baikonur 30.01.2016 at 01 : 20 ​​MSK.
