Based on released global maps of Pluto ( http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA19858, http://pluto.jhuapl.edu/Multimedia/Science-Photos/image.php?page=1&gallery_id=2&image_id=315 and http://www.boulder.swri.edu/~buie/pluto/hrcmap.html )

Color was toned down from the original false color version (for more realistic results) and some data from a lower resolution similar release was added. The map was shifted to present 0º longitude at center (as normal for Orbiter)

There's also a map for MapMFD, visible if you change "MFDMapVersion = 0" to the Orbiter.cfg.

This addon is texture only, compatible with "Pluto and Moons" by piper.

Have fun!

Timing depends on NASA release, because their images can be distributed freely. There's already a Charon map but not free to use (the same goes for Ceres).

The pluto.cfg needs some tweaks to orient the planet properly, at least for the New Horizons flyby. It's showing the wrong side!
I tried some changes but was unable to sort it, so I'll leave it for orbital mechanics experts :-)

Cristiapi has been helpful in getting the needed update for "Pluto and Moons" by piper.

So open pluto.cfg and change the rotation elements to:

; === Rotation Elements ===
SidRotPeriod = 551856.70656000 ; sec (6.3872304 days)
Obliquity = 1.97 ; rad
SidRotOffset = 2.46 ; rad. CHARON_SidRotOffset - pi
LAN = 0.83 ; rad (47.555 deg)

This makes the whole New Horizons mission worthwhile. Great stuff!

Wow.
This, coupled with the excellent Piper work, raises in me the desire to make an orbiter-lander mission to Pluto!

I hope in a similar treatment for Charon!

Updated with the latest high resolution map.
The colors on NASA's release are enhanced, so I've toned them down a but, but its not as bland as before.
Also added some south pole coverage from an old source. Doesn't matter much for current dates, but may make it look better if you are decades in the future.

...a Charon map but not free to use (the same goes for Ceres).

sorry for slightly off question, but what do you mean by this? How can any kind of solar system map not be free??? I mean, any... :dry:
