On the recent Day of Russia, I've been to Monino not very far from Moscow, to see the open air exhibition of Soviet/Russian Air Force and Civil aircraft. Took a large amount of pictures, which are now uploaded, sorted and tagged in two languages.

Great pictures! I was there in person in 1990 and just had a great time checking out the cool and exotic (to me) airplanes. I grew up hanging out at an American air force base, and it was fun to see 'the other side', as it was back then. I thought the Mig 105 Spiral was just about the coolest thing I ever saw - shame they didn't do more with that.

Interesting. Do they look much different now, in your impression? Has something improved, or the opposite way out?

I thought the Mig 105 Spiral was just about the coolest thing I ever saw - shame they didn't do more with that.

The failure of this program has got a name - A.A. Grechko. It was him who sealed the fate of the project through saying "A space plane? We aren't going to chase pipedreams". That happened about 10 years before the Space Shuttle flew for the first time.

Likewise, every major axing has got a name...

Yes, it flew. However, they never attempted the VTOL ability.

It looks very much as I remember it, even the position of the planes. I recall that the people in our tour group were the only ones there, and the hangars and aircraft were closed, despite it being a nice July day. Our visit may have been during the work week.
