Orbiter Video Thread

THAT was awesome. That last few seconds is spectacular. Where did you get that scenario of the Burj al Arab?

Thanks

I got the model from Google 3D Warehouse and then created a base with it.
Getting the elevated landing pad to work was a bit tricky, but i did it with Artlav's MeshLand.

Glad you enjoyed the flight.

WOW! Amazing landing there! Edge of your seat flying for sure!!

That's the kind of landing where the passengers come tumbling out the hatch, vomiting and running away.

Here's my first video release done with Orbiter, for the LCROSS impact. Sorry about the Romanian captions.

Put this in the wrong video thread.

A quick flight in Dubai that ends with a landing ON the "Burj al Arab". Enjoy!

Cool. That's some party trick and a half. To get that snakebite reinforced stall you must be shifting the CG backwards. I use the same for manual reentry with the XR2, though not to that extreme. Got a little time today. I will give it a try...

PS: Like the skin, is that a Gorgon's head?

Edit:
Yep. CG backwards, and just before the pitch levels with the horizon, engage attitude hold AP mode. Very good!

 You got it.
Pulling back on the stick and shifting the CoG back makes you pitch up massively. When you get close to 0 degrees hit "L" to engage the attitude hold AP (set to 0.0 ) and full thrust on the hover engines.
The altitude at which to start the "handbrake" depends on your ships load and vertical speed.
In the video i started the maneuver at approximately 1100 meters and landed on the pad which was 206 meters above ground.

Credit should go to agentgonzo for his amazing playback

The skin i used in these videos is made from these:

A 5th century BC Spartan shield. The Greek letter "Lamda" stands for "Lacedaemonian" which is the ancient Greek word for Spartan.

On the vertical stabilizers and on the wings is this:

But ever since i started a "Stunt-alley" project in orbiter, i've been using this:

lol

Have fun, happy orbiting.

It should work for anything the JEM/KIBO is attached too.

How far back do you put the CoG? Also, once you've gotten level, do you then recentre it?

As far as you have to, to get that "snakebite" (as Keith gracefully put it) effect.
Depends on your load (payload, crew and fuel) and your vertical speed.

The fastest way to recentre it is to hit "L" (attitude hold AP set to 0.0) when your ship's "nose" approaches -10 degrees.

It's a very difficult maneuvre to perform and even more difficult to be able to land "spot on" on a Lpad. (But... you have to admit... it's by far the COOLEST! lol)

Save a scenario when you are at 15000m going vertical above a runway.

I recommend to start at a "safe" altitude (say... 3000 meters) and then work your way down. Try different speeds. (there are limitations... you cannot open your hover or your retro doors at any speed)

Also, try it with a full load (full fuel, full crew, CHM, and two fuel tanks) and also with an "empty" Ravenstar (only the pilot and nothing else than VERY little fuel) to get the different "feel".

Practice - practice - practice!

Ah! There you are. Could not find this thread again (there's another very similarly titled one and I was wondering why posts had apparently disappeared).

Yeah, finished reading the Histories by Herodotus only about 8 or 9 months ago. Fascinating read...

But ever since i started a "Stunt-alley" project in orbiter, i've been using this:

Skull and Crutch-bones? That's good... but, what am I missing here? What's the stunt alley project?

You must be talking about the [Internet] Video Thread located in the Off-Topic forum. That's for any random video, where as this thread located in the Orbiter Web Forum, is dedicated for only Orbiter related videos.

My first video...

Okay. All this "hot dogging" that's going on at the moment has got me going now. Followed Tex's lead, signed up to Vimeo.com, and tried my hand at a video sample. Bit poor quality, but it is my first attempt at one, apart form a few 3D anims made over a decade ago on the Amiga with Imagine (which don't really count now).

Here's the vid,

EDIT: I deleted the original video. The new version is a few posts down...

Here's the inspiration,

Hope to improve the video quality. It is great fun. Good article on making them, too, Tex.

Hah, you know, I was just thinking about trying a Cobra with the XR2 today. Nice work!

Formal and public apologies from me to Coolhand. There was no intention of undermining his work. When I update the video with a better quality version, I will put that right in the titles...

On the subject of quality, and I don't think it is too much off the topic of this thread, what recommendations are there for making better videos of Orbiter? The resolution and quality of Tex's videos are unattainable with what I am using, apparently. I have tried Fraps (free version), Taksi (absolute rubbish) and Game Cam, but cannot get this last one to even hook to orbiter. Is it a case of full screen or windowed mode? The devices? What's the trick, please?

My thanks in advance!

My third video...

The new version of the same video mentioned above, slightly improved and corrections made...

EDIT: Video removed from Vimeo.
