Project Orbiter Galaxy

Does it crash or does it freeze? If it freezes, that's completely normal. It'll stay frozen until the textures have finished exporting, which can take a while.

If you find yourself on desktop immediately after clicking the save button, something is not going as it should. Set the generation method to CPU (0) in your OGalaxy.cfg and see if that helps.

Sorry i meant freeze. I will just wait untill it ready

The texture export can take quite a while... And, if you're exporting on GPU and using the standalone, the window will never actually unfreeze. I should have put some sort of indicator in...

If you are exporting in Orbiter, then you'll have a clear indication that the export is finished (the window will pop up, but stay frozen).

If it is taking longer than 20 minutes with standard settings, your GPU is probably not up to the task, and you'll be better off switching to the CPU for generation, because then you'll have a status display. We still haven't figured out why the window freezes when exporting with GPU, and nothing I tried so far could make it unfreeze. The only hope left is that Artlav can solve the problem on his side.

I'm having some kind of problem when using the save feature. A short time after trying to save a new hotspot folder or system orbiter will crash. As well the save feature dosent seem to work, meaning that the folder I tried to save wasnt created.

Welcome to the Forum, Kowkillar!

Have you installed the patch? 0.6.04 did away with quite a few GUI instabilities. If you have the patch, this is alarming news, and I might not be as done yet with version 0.6 as I thought I was...

As well the save feature dosent seem to work, meaning that the folder I tried to save wasnt created.

Have you entered a filename into the textbox? And if yes, have you reloaded that file, or set it as your standard HotSpots file in the OGalaxy.cfg? Please describe the exact steps you have taken in creating and saving the folder, as currently I don't quite understand what you are exactly talking about, wheather the creation or the loading process.

Yes I have patch 0.6.04 and yes I have put a filename into the textbox. When I click save whatever I was trying to save will appear in the appropriate box, but when I close the window and then open it again it will be gone. When I checked in the orbiter galaxy folder no hotspot folder was created so I cant switch to it in the cfg.

Checked and confirmed, Hotspots don't get saved. That feature hasn't been tested for a long while, seems like something got messed up during developement. Will be fixed, wait for next patch. Thanks for reporting!

Any luck in reproducing the CTD? I don't get any...

EDIT: Oooops, wrong directory designation. The root directory changed since the last version, so Orbiter Galaxy can't find the directory to save the file. Since I didn't test this feature since 0.5, I never noticed. Will be fixed quickly.

It dosent happen right when I click save. It might be something other than the save system giving me trouble. I've also noticed that the standalone program wont unfreeze after trying to save to cache or folder when set to GPU generation. I've waited over 30 min and it still hasnt moved.

I was wondering if the texture generation can be done in a separate thread, keeping the GUI active, with appropriate buttons disabled. Update a progress bar in the GUI as planets are completed perhaps ? Do you call a particular function to start the export ?

New patch is up, restores all galaxy overview functionality.

So far the cause of the window freeze is completely unknown. It might have to do with the texture library creating an invisible window when run on the GPU, but obviously it's not that easy or Artlav would probably have it fixed already.

As for multithreading, well... It might or might not fix the issue. I liked it like this because I didn't have to do anything to prevent the user from doing anything stupid while the export is running. Putting another thread in there might take a bit of toil. Majorly because I don't know jack about multithreading. The current thread structure was implemented by Face. I can give it a shot, but I have no Idea of the outcome.

Known issue. I hope it'll be fixable...
But be warned, 30 minutes can actually be a short time if you have high texture settings and a weak GPU (like me, for example). I guess I'll have to try some more ways to fix this before moving on...

Really. In orbiter it usually only takes a minute or two, but I havent changed any of the default settings so their probably set low.

Then you have a quite decent graphics card. Mind telling me what model? I'm still torn between "OMG it's freaking fast now" and "OMG, I can't buy anything to eat next month"...

The standard settings usually take about 15 minutes on a fast CPU. Time tends to rise exponentially with levels, a single level 8 needs at least 15 minutes all by itself on my CPU. Fastest I've heard was from Artlav, who can export one in about 30 seconds, but his graphics card costs a kingdom, and I don't even have a donkey!

And done we are... Status display now works when exporting on GPU, and the window won't stay frozen afterwards either. Get the new patch and enjoy!

Now, about those requests for extended planetary parameters... what do you think about the suggestions I made?

Unfortunately I still have the bug with Venusian planets (and I have the 6.0.7 patch).
ogdebugn.jpg

This is in the Procyon system, which has a really cool binary planet (Procyon D) where the moon is almost touching the planet.

Well, it's not a bug anymore. It's officially the actual density (a bit more, even) a planet with such an atmospheric pressure would have. The only way to eliminate this is introducing an artificial maximum density, but it as I heard so far such planets are nowhere out of the possible.

Fine by me :)

Re: atmosphere - AFAIR you can also try tweaking the reference altitude to get faster pressure decline...

My graphics card is a piece of crap now. ATI HD 3200

Is the window that opens when you press map supposed to be called "Orbiter Dialog Template"? That's what the window that opens for me is called.

So you CAN open the galaxy map now. That's good to hear. Mind telling me where the problem was?

as for the window name, yeah, that's a bit diletantic... I don't know how to change the name from the top of my head, and so far (and for some time in the future) I'm having too much more important stuff to do. It'd probably only take ten minutes to find out how to change the name and do it, but I couldn't get myself to invest those 10 minutes yet...

Well, mine is crapier, ATI XT 1900... I'm planing on a new one for christmass, and I'm still trying to find a good compromise between speed and money.

For the window name: open the resource editor, find the single dialog template there and change the title in the properties window.

I could do it for you in about 2 mins, too, but I think for this work the time for you to package and upload the code as well as for me downloading, extracting and recompiling the code is wastly overshooting the 2 mins actually fixing the problem :) .

regards,
Face
