Launch at ~300s to orbit intersect.

SRB sep.

Shortly before MECO. Decided against the heads-up profile, something about the roll maneuver always seems to drop me back into the atmosphere...

Inverted tank jettison.

Skipping about ten orbits of alignments and synchronization, we get our first look at the station during approach. Had to kill rotation with the core module to make docking possible.

I hate taking pictures in the dark. Hard dock, looking up at the Nebulus and MCT from the flight deck.

Now this is just poor planning. No way the Shuttle RMS is gonna get that in place, and the station's RMS can't reach. Time for the backup plan.

Guess I'll just be manhandling this into place.

Installation complete, returning to Atlantis.

Great, we get to look at permanent UMMUFA messages the whole way down. Anyone figured out a way to get rid of them?

Passing over the Gulf, banking to try and get in line with KSC.

Just not quite enough speed to bank around to the runway. Eh, close enough. Smooth landing in the Cape swamp.

Mission 12 From AIA to Station

XR-5 awaiting clearance, departure and climb-out...



...Where never lark, or even eagle flew ...


After a short correction (rinc was .15), orbit was synchonized in order to approach the OFSS.


Payload module was extracted using the OFSS's RMS, while astronaut Cameron Mitchell observes and guides the P3P4 Module into place.

Taking a break (call it crew rest), more to follow after some technical issues are worked out. More pics to follow after I get some sleep (translate that into the wife telling me to go to bed after work).

Mission 12 (part deux)

After some intervention from the ground-side tech reps, construction recommenced.



After a short break (and a trip around the darkside) the XR-5 departs the OFSS for home.





Wheel stop, and OFSS Mission 12 is complete (and the next piece arrives).

Mission 14

Hawaiian authorities were unpleased that the reenty of the Progress Cargo Ferry was so close to the islands. Wideawake Space Center said that they had to check the facts before they could make any comments.

Oceanic, who was in charge of the deorbit burn said that a FPS-abnormality could be the cause for this incident.

Mission 15

Mission 15 is underway. The XR5 Vanguard lifted off from Wideawake International on schedule, carrying the Novae1 module to the OFSS, enhancing our view of the planet Earth and the heavens.

After a relatively routine ascent into orbit, the crew successfully aligned planes with the station and began rendezvous maneuvers. With TI burns complete, the XR5 is now at a range of about 4000 meters from the station. Preparations are underway to extend the XR5's docking port and begin docking operations. The OFSS crew are preparing to place the station in an attitude suitable for docking maneuvers, making it easier for the XR5 crew to approach the station and complete the docking.

Mission coverage will continue on Friday, October 16th, at approximately 6 PM EDT.

Mission 15 (cont'd)

After a successful rendezvous and docking, the RMS aboard the OFSS was used to lift the Novae1 module from the XR5's payload bay and maneuver it into position. Once in position, the crew berthed the module to dock 3 of the OFSS Core module. The crew is currently inspecting all seals to ensure no leaks exist. Once this check is complete, preparations will begin for undocking and separation burn, followed by reentry procedures. Undocking is scheduled for approximately 10:15 p.m. EDT tonight. Recap of undocking and reentry, along with video stills of mission completion, will be available immediately following wheels stop.
