Is there a reason I cant hear external hover and main engine takeoff/landing sounds on the Moon ?

This is correct, especially with Orbiter Sound 3.5 4.0 (thanks, hedzup456) (latest release). You'll barely hear them on Mars as well.

Silly question, but do you have the "Realistic (No sound in vacuum)" option turned on?

This place called "home".

There is no significant atmosphere on the Moon, so there is no medium the sound-waves can move in. Therefore there is no sound on the Moon or any other place in space were it is vacuum.

As the other ones are saying: if you still want the unrealistic sound, open SoundConfig.exe and deselect "Allow the Silence of Space".

Thanks guys. I presumed that was the reason.
Shame the silence in space setting cant be applied per vessel.

I believe it can be set via the OrbiterSound MFD but why would you?

In Orbiter Sound Configuration app second tick box is "Allow the Silence of Space"

Untick it and you'll have sound in vacuum.

Thanks. I am playing with an Eagle1999 on the moon and it seems pretty boring without the engine sounds. Unrealistic I know.

So are most space-based sci-fi shows and movies. :p If stuff doesn't go "boom" and "zoom', most people won't watch it: too boring.

On the contrary, I don't usually install Orbiter Sound, unless I really need to. Flying without sound doesn't feel boring at all, and I can focus more on the visuals. :p

I particularly enjoyed the battle in Serenity that featured pretty cool space silence. Also, Space Odyssey was good at this wasn't it?

Maybe I used the wrong word "boring" , maybe I should have said entertaining.
Strangely, I normally have the volume off altogether in Orbiter.

It is easy to mix those words up, they pretty much mean the same thing.

Well, I do like how they played it both way in the Star Trek reboot of 2009, there is one scene, early in the movie when the USS Kelvin is getting nailed, that you see an explosion followed by decompression of a section of the hull, and people getting blown out are in dead silence right after leaving the ship, even though phasers and torpedoes are zooming everywhere to be seen...

Kinda says "We know. It should be silent. Here's one to show we do know that. Now shut up and listen to the Sound FX orgy!"
