So for the last 6 months or so I've been developing an addon focused on the canceled Apollo Applications Project missions and spacecraft.

The reason I haven't started a proper dev-thread is that I'm having trouble settling on a name. "Spider" & "Gumdrop" are the current working titles for the LM and CSM respectively but I have plans to expand beyond the the historical spacecraft to include the proposed derivatives such as the LM "Truck" and "Lab", interplanetary fly-by missions, and CSM derived "Lifeboat", and "Logistics" modules.

Unfortunately my initial choice "Beyond Apollo" [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=5664"]has already been claimed[/ame], so I am soliciting the community for suggestions.

Ideas thus far...

  • "Orbiter AAP" (Apollo Applications Project / Another Apollo Project) ;)
  • "UMMU Apollo", descriptive but I'm hesitant to use DanSteph's brandname
  • "Apollo X" or "Apollo +", courtesy of SpaceShuttleFan.
  • "ANG" (Apollo Next Gen), courtesy of PhantomCruiser.
  • "Helios", also from PhantomCruiser, I like it but would rather save it for a non-historical project.

Transposition and docking. The SLA starts off as part of the CSM and the LM as a Payload. When the CSM seperates a new SLA class vessel is generated and the payload attached to it, this allows the complete stack to be defined as a single payload for any existing launch vehicle. See below.

Combined LM and CSM, defined as a payload for Glider's Falcon Heavy. See more shots from this mission here.

LM "Truck" unmanned UCCGO carrier.

LM "Lab/Shelter" Initial mesh design.

CSM's virtual cockpit, a work in progress

Transposition and docking as seen from CSM's VC. Docking reticle / HUD not yet installed.

LM's virtual cockpit, almost done.

I like Artemis. Sister of Apollo

The initial lunar base to be created during the Apollo Applications Program was originally designated "Apollo Extension Series" missions. That's a potential name.

The fully evolved Apollo Lunar base was to be called "Lunar Exploration System for Apollo." That's another possibility. Albeit rather uncreative, they're descriptive and exciting, I think.

In ancient Greece, Apollo was the god with the most epithets.
Perhaps you can look [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Epithets_of_Apollo"]here[/ame] for inspiration.

"Apollo Cynthius" doesn't sound too bad. "Apollo Didymaeus" is another that can be loosely translated to "Apollo twin".

But I must say that I prefer the Apollo Next Gen for an addon name.

"Artemis" is the name chosen for the future inflatable lunar oupost of the FOI lunar program...

Lol - that's why my new SRB derived launcher will be called Poseidon :leaving:

As for add-on name I'd go with EAA - Extended Apollo Aplication or EAS - Extended Apollo System

Good suggestions keep 'em coming. some thoughts upon reading a few of the links...

  • Chariots of Apollo (COA), Book title but not an addon yet
  • Laurels of Apollo (LOA), in same veign as above

"Artemis" and the greek epithets are nice but they fall into the same catagory as "Helios". I'd rather use them for their own projects.

Looks very nice.

If I had to vote, I would choose "Apollo +" or "ANG". :2cents:

Shameless bribe:

I have a question: in the first post, a Falcon rocket is shown being used as the as the launch vehicle. Why not use a Titan III, more faithful to the time period?

Because I did not have a Titan II addon installed at the time and all I needed to do was make sure that my method of lauching the combined LM & CSM would be compatible with 3rd party LVs.

Also because, why the hell not?

Although some part of that stack must be incorrect as the Falcon Heavy doesn't have the payload capacity for a single launch moon mission with Apollo hardware. I would guess the CSM must be underweight compared to its actual values?

To be honest I dont really like any of the names suggested so far, but I cant think of anything better anyways . Maybe I'll think of something.

I think that's the Falcon X Heavy, not the Falcon Heavy. Apparently that can deliver 125 mT to LEO.

That's all I got. Coming up with a name is tough.

Apollo Ultra, sister project of SSU?
Inspiration Luna?
Artemis Express? (this was the name I chose for my first BEO space probe, a stock Chapman orbiter)
Diana Expedition?
