Here are 1958 U.S.A. plans for sending people to the moon by the year 2000.
This article dates less then a year from the launch of Sputnik 1, and 3 years before the first manned spaceflight by Yuri Gagarin.

Right here:
http://books.google.ca/books?id=xiUDAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PP1&pg=PA102#v=onepage&q&f=false

On the next page;
"Five steps to the first conquest of space would culminate in the landing of a manned vehicle on the moon in 2000 A.D."

:lol:

I bet they had absolutely no idea what the year 2000 would look, be, or feel like.
Don't even mention Orbiter...

Lol, my grandpa always said that they all thought we'd be flying to work by jetpack or have a fold up car or something haha
unfortunately, they were wrong

Yeah, but could they predict a device I can carry around in my pocket that can show my exact location, communicate by voice, text or video to anyone else in the world, and access an unlimited network of information? Plus Angry Birds? :lol:

I love my Angry Birds. :lol: i guess they just had a little to high hopes for somethings. I do love my Mytouch 4g.

Give or take a few years. :lol:
It's funny seeing such old articles and knowing how off they were.

Speaking of the moon, in the Spider episode of From the Earth to the Moon, two guys though of a way to send people to the moon quickly -- first send a crew to the moon and keep giving them supplies to sustain themselves while trying to figure out a way to bring the crew back. Stranded. :lol:
