Finally made it to Mars and build a station in Mars orbit.
Now I want to head down to the surface with a somewhat realistic lander than also has the capability of returning back to orbit for re-docking.

I looked on orbiter hanger but can't find anything that remotely looks realistic ( heatshield and all) except for the ARES lander (which is a pain to land) and a nice picture on the "Mars Total Immersion" add-on of a lander with heatshield although I don't have a clue were to find this particular lander.

Any help to get my astronauts to the surface ( and back) would be greatly appriciated

Currently in-work by markp.

Edit: And back. Oh. Nevermind, sorry.

Yeah, back to orbit is kinda a must for realism.
Thanks for the link though.

How sad is it that we apparently do not have 1 single realistic Mars lander ..............
Sad........

One possibility is the Aeroneutronic lander from sputnik's [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=838"]Orion 1.22.[/ame]

Was the Ares you tried [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3393"]this one[/ame] or [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=2717"]this one?[/ame]

In a way, the shortage of Mars landers with ascent capability is realistic. Most current Mars reference missions seem to assume a pre-deployed ascent vehicle and a separate lander. No need for that to stop the addon developers, though. ;)

There is the cargo lander in the DRM1 addon that has the Mars Ascent Vehicle. Would that be any good? The MAV has a docking port and is intended to return a crew to Mars orbit for docking with an Earth Return Vehicle (although I haven't tried that yet). Problem is that a crew has to be added to the MAV on the surface. I could have a look at modifying the lander so a crew can be added anytime.

Also so too in real life...

With a planet that has 50% of earth's atmospheric pressure and density...yeah i guess....it moves around a bit if it's on Earth though..
No it can't. I tried about a year ago, it wants to swing around and plunge head-first into Mars. Its flightmodel is unreal, and the mesh has no aeroshield anyway, so as far as "realism" goes in Orbiter, best stick with airless bodies for this one. :2cents:
