Not really a small one, as you can see in the photograph. One person is reported missing after the tornado threw a crane into the ocean, the Ilva steel mill is heavily damaged by it.

Had been just the most extreme weather condition in a series of extreme weather events in southern Italy today.

The steel mill is one of the biggest in Europe and in the spot light for many bad news... corruption, pollution, all you like. Looks like the people in Taranto can now take a deep breath of cleaner air for a few days.

Awful, normally associate tornados with US towns, strange to see one in a european industrial setting.

Tornadoes can happen really anywhere, all you need are the right conditions such as sheer, vertical instability, so on, so forth. It's rare to get them in November with such intensity though. Strangely enough, there was also an officially recognized Tropical Storm in the Mediterranean last year.
