Is Orbiter 2010 P1 fully compatible with Windows7? Did someone find any problems with that?

Fully compatible. No issues.

Yes indeed. You'll drop out of Aero's fancy "glass" mode, if you're using it, when you fire Orbiter up, just like any old game. That is not a major hardship in the grand scheme of things.

Not just old games either--a lot of newer ones do it too. The transition is also pretty quick, so it's not a big deal.

Right. Is there a hard and fast rule on when glass needs to be turned off and when it doesn't?

AFAIK most games use something specefic with rendering that is not compatible with Aero so Win7 automatically disables it.

Although sometimes it doesn't I had one game that didn't work unless I manually disabled Aero, what a pain.

Aye. Starcraft will work under Aero, but the colours will be so mixed up it's unplayable. It's not much of a problem for me because I use the classic scheme anyway. Old school.

It has something to do with how the game insantiates the renderer--if you'll notice, Orbiter turns Aero off only when it actually starts the simulation, not when it's sitting on the launchpad. Something about starting the 3d acceleration causes it to turn Aero off, but I'm not really sure what.

I'm running Win7 Ultimate. The Orbiter Launchpad runs, but when I Launch, the Launch Screen displays BRIGHTLY then DIMS and the program is halted at that point.

Well, for the sake of routine, can you post the .log file? This sounds more like a Windows problem than one with orbiter, but it can't hurt. Did this just start happening, or has it always happened to you. I'd recommend updating your drivers on graphics cards.

I think I narrowed it down a little. Originally I unpacked all the ZIP files available, 16 in all. When Orbiter failed I deleted all files and folders and just unzipped orbiter100830.zip and Orbiter worked. I then unzipped Earth091124_11_14.zip and all was well. Then Moon090730_L11.zip and all is well. I'll continue this until I find the set of files that's causing the problem.

I went through all the other zip files with the exception of not overwriting files and Orbiter works fine. I don't know why all the other zip's are there as they are redundant. I would recommend as you install Orbiter that you NOT overwrite files that exist even though they are of the same date/time.

What are those other zip files that overwrite Orbiter data? They can't be Orbiter distribution's optional components, but maybe they are add-ons. Can you name them?

Here is a list of all files I originally down loaded from this site...
http://downloadorbiter.com/?page_id=70

csphere100830.zip
Deimos_L5.zip
Dione_L7.zip
Earth091124_11_14.zip
Enceladus_L8.zip
Iapetus_L8.zip
Io_L7.zip
Mars091218_11.zip
Mercury_L8.zip
Moon090730_L11.zip

Phobos_L5.zip
Planets_and_moons.zip
Rhea_L7.zip
Tethys_L7.zip
Titan_L7.zip

If you downloaded Planets_and_moons.zip, you don't need to download these, as they are included in Planets_and_moons package:
Deimos_L5.zip
Dione_L7.zip
Enceladus_L8.zip
Iapetus_L8.zip
Io_L7.zip
Mercury_L8.zip
Phobos_L5.zip
Rhea_L7.zip
Tethys_L7.zip
Titan_L7.zip

As orb pointed out, a lot of the files you were overwriting were probably from planets_and_moons.zip, so it didn't matter.

However, if the date/time/size is different, not overwriting when you extract could cause the addon to not work correctly, as some addons need to overwrite orbiter default files in order to work. This is why using an addon manager is a good idea...

ORB,

Clearly, after the fact, all the other zip's are not needed. Would be nice to add a note to the d/l page explaining what files are needed. I figured I needed them all.

Hielor,

Originally I overwrite ALL files and that's what caused problems. The fix, in my case, was to unzip, but NOT overwrite existing files. It appears that a file in one of the other zip's caused a problem when it overwrote an existing file.

Thanks!
Harry

There is that information on this page:

That's why I've never posted a link to downloadorbiter.com if someone asked, but to downloadorbitersim.com.

No problems here on 7.

I wonder if this latest incarnation of Orbiter was developed and complied with 7 as a platform. AFAIK Martin has always utilized XP.
