My theory is that women like to be where the best shopping and social life is (big cities) and men like to fancy themselves as lumberjacks or other adventuring types (the woodland frontiers of the Northwest). Or as computer geniuses or rocket scientists (Silicon Valley, Huntsville, etc.), which is almost as bad.
There's a reason why Sex and the City is set in New York instead of Fairbanks!
