Sorry if this offends anybody, it was not meant that way.

No offense taken, I was just really curious how we could read entirely different things

Aren't there generic software mouse->joystick solutions out there? What would be wrong with one of those?

Can you be more specific, please?
A software driver that you install which presents itself as a joystick, but uses mouse input to drive that virtual joystick input.

PPJoy used to have a "ppjoymouse" tool that basically did this, but I couldn't find any legit-looking downloads in the couple minutes I spent searching. But, that's fairly out of date.

You'd want to find something written using vJoy, which is the newer version. This might do what you want:
https://github.com/raptorswing/MouseToJoystick

I just don't see the point in somebody spending time to write something specific to Orbiter when generic software solutions already exist. Honestly kind of surprised that people were suggesting hardware solutions first...

I need to investigate how will it behave under linux.

MouseToJoystick github site says this:
https://github.com/raptorswing/MouseToJoystick said:
Requires windows because it uses vJoy.

PPJoy also seems to be a Windows-only joystick driver.

If computerex is not interested in expanding his code (or even answering), I fear you are out of luck of getting a solution to your specific needs anytime soon. Perhaps you can negotiate a deal with some of the developers here? I bet that contributing modelers are more than welcome to several of the ongoing projects.

It would be great to have a mouse control but I fear that mouse->joy drivers wouldn't get the job done properly. Does anyone have any actual experience about them ?

Meanwhile, I'll take a look into the API documentation...

Oh, I thought the question was for Orbiter, which only runs on Windows.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if something similar existed for Linux.

That's why I wrote "specific needs":
Moreover, I am running an Orbiter under wine (linux), and I am not really spending much time with it because I am a student.

From the other hand - is there a way to operate airfoils without a keypad? From what I remember, redefining keys didn't work either. Or do I miss something here?
