Cool names for spacecraft

How about... Kevin? :lol:

Also, I wouldn't name an extrasolar lander the "Invader". If it's uninhabited planet, I guess it could be fine... but I bet a lot of people wouldn't like an Invader landing on their home turf... :P

A few from I've been working on in the Sci-fi Novel/Universe I've been writing.

The tech level is approximate to Arthur C Clark's universe circa 2060

Spirit of Babylon: (Our hero's vessel) is a mid range (Earth/Mars) colonization vessel nick-named the "the wh*re" by her crew. The other vessels of her class are all named after ancient cities/civilizations (Spirit of Rome, Qin, etc...)

Earth-based Scientific and Exploratory vessels follow NASA's current nautical tradition (Discovery, Endevour, Opprotunity...)

"Espatier" earth-based "orbital Coast Guard", vessels are named after famous astronauts and aviators (ESV Gagarin, ESV Lindbergh...)

Indipendant Colonial Ships generally have more whimsical names depending on thier purpose (a shout out to Andromeda and the Culture Novels)

Examples:
Filthy Lucre, Safe Bet, Mother Loade (Mining Vessels)
Break Even, Prime Mover, Kiss It! (Heavy Lift Shuttles)
Everlasting Glory, Persuasive Argument, Big Stick (Colonial Security)
Indecent Proposal, Screams in the void, Sh*t Happens (Privateers)

Space Stations are traditionally named after great Writers and or Scientists "Clark Station", "Port Lowell".

I'm working on a little craft I've tenatively titled Arcadia
The command ship I've got in-the-works nameplate reads Tanasi
[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanasi"]Tanasi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

Ship's have traditionally had women's names so here are my suggestions:

- Hypathia (4th century astronomer from Alexandria);
- Valentina Tereshkova;
- Caroline Herschel;
- Henrietta Leavitt;
- Sally K. Ride (yeah!);
- Julie Payette (Hey, she's from my hometown!);
- Amy Mainzer (!!!);
- Katherine Aurora Gray (at 10 yrs old, the youngest astronomer to discover a supernova);

Lots more where these came from. (Women have been well represented in space and astronomy).

Cheers.

Names I'm using for interstellar vessels: Infinity, Delphinus, Altair, few others I don't immediately recall. Vessel should be custom-namable like the Deltaglider anyway...

A lander called lander? I know redundancy is a great thing for spaceflight but that takes it a little too far :P

Anyways, my suggestions:
  • consternation
  • contrivable (would choose this if I were to have a personal spacecraft :rolleyes:)
  • constitution

Note - Thesaurus.com is good for finding fancy words

Or a spacecraft called... Craft.
But hey, its not like we're actually naming a ship, or spacecraft or whatever. :P

Tanasi... I'm pretty sure that's how someone with a real deep southern accent says "Tennessee". :lol:

Actually it was a place, the original site is underwater now (Tellico lake). For a short time it was the capitol of the Cherokee Nation. I've got next week off, so I might road trip and take a few pictures. Clingman's Dome might be in the works as well, depends upon the wife and kid.

Here's another few names for the fleet...

Hiwassee
Conasauga
Ocoee
and maybe...
Cumberland
Chatahoochee
All rivers withing a short distance from here (in the case of Hiwasse, very close)

I know, I read about it before I posted. :P
I know what you mean though, but here, usually its getting the husband and wife to go, not the kid. :lol:

What was I thinking?... I forgot Chickamauga!

What are some of the creeks/rivers over your direction? (besides Stone's River?)

One of my best sheer brilliance moments was when I was working on my 2.7 novel spat a couple of years ago. I had an entire plot going; the work was set over a thousand years into the future and the logistical part involved a space navy.

The main character's ship, a 300m/100m light cruiser (really more of a guided torpedo vessel that could pull a forward acceleration of 6.2km/sec with gravity compensation) was named CNS Anaconda (after spending much of her 100+ year history bearing only her hull number, CL-6674).

Since then, I've been lousy at naming ships or people. Go figure. :rolleyes:

Polaris's list of cool names for spacecraft (Part 1):

Normandy

Agincourt

Robert A. Heinlein

Washington Irving

Shiloh

Valley Forge

Dante Alighieri

Some of my favorites:
S.S. Botany Bay
Tiger's Claw
Pillar of Autumn
Serenity
Valley Forge
Reliant
And of course, U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701

And now, once I get home from work, I'll reminisce with some fond memories of visiting Clingman's Dome with my now-ex-wife, followed by watching Star Trek II: TWOK and then the Star Trek reboot...

"Botany Bay? BOTANY BAY?!?! Oh no! We've got to get out of here! DEMM!!!."

Arcadia like Captain Harlock's starship (although the alternative spelling Alkadia is ubercool).
Argo as in the mythical ship of the Argonauts (and of course the Americanized name of the Yamato).
Thunder Road as in Joe Dante's Explorers. Haven't seen it? You've missed a treat.
Norge for the airship that overflew the North Pole.
Romy Schneider because...
