Gaming Chess

I've just got into playing chess, and I'm ashamed that I didn't know how to play it for the first 17 years of my life! I just love the strategy of the game, and the way that it's basically a whole system of attack and defence all on one 8x8 board. I've only been playing a few months, but I was wondering - how long has the intellectual bunch on this forum been playing, and roughly how good would you rate yourself out of 10 (with 1 being total beginner and 10 being grand master)? I'd probably be about 3/4 now.

I was forced into learning how to play in an advanced class in 3rd grade. :lol: I am a freshman in high school right now. As much as I love the game, I have never been too good at it. So I would say I'm a solid 5. I know the rules, but my record with it was about as bad as the Detroit Lion's winning record last year. :shifty:

Ah, Chess! A great game!

I was fortunate enough to be taught the basic rules at an early age by my father, and i have played since then. That doesn't mean I'm good though I'd rate myself as a 5 or 6, perhaps less though. I recently started a chess club at my school, so I have been playing a lot more this year than normally. I know basic notation, but am far from learning actual openings and moves. If anyone needs someone to play with, Chess.com is a great site.

I've always found chess to be moderately entertaining. I've always liked it, but not enough to keep playing at gain actual skill. I was in chess club when I was a freshman in high school for about two months, but I quit because it was interfering with my grades and I just didn't like it enough.

I'd rate myself a 1, probably because my main strategy is "capture all the pieces." It's kinda strange how I'm bad at Chess because INTJs like me are supposed to be good chess players.

I've been playing chess for a little while. My college has it's own Board/Card Games Club.

I'm fairly good at chess, (I'd rank myself about: 4). But I prefer card games such as Poker, Blackjack and Pontoon. I don't ever play for money though, It's supposed to be a friendly game.

I'm OK at it; I think ahead but there's really no plan. Everyone expects me to be great at it, but I'm not. I give myself a 4-5.

Been playing chess most of my life, and still i'm no good at it.
Surely, some expertise and a little bit of research on the fundamentals of chess wouldn't hurt. (Playing human opponents).
But I think that people tend to confuse it, as the ultimate test of the human mind against a machine. Creativity vs. Computing.

In this test, the "machine" will win, (I think it has already won)

Ultimately, a chess game, is a game of probability and some machines are better at that than others.
That being said, supposedly there are 10 to the power of 26 games, that can be played.(depending on what "book" you are reading, others say multiples of that).

Does it really matter?

Chess is chess, and i always like a good game.
Anyone up for it?

I can vouch for chess.com. Great guys on staff (erik, etc.), great community, great site. Been there since the beginning in 2007.

I'd rate myself a 3. Got the rules down pat, but not much else. Rated 880 at chess.com

Tried it a while back, but time-zones and RL got in the way.

I tried to do it with XR2Ravenstars, but someone else, came up with a better answer.
The Orbinaut known as "Keith", came up with "real" Orbiter chess pieces, that could hover and land at any 64 Lpads base.

We tried to play an Orbiter forum chess game, but it took too long.

(Probably my fault, not his.)

It has a much simpler board/pieces/rules, and yet an extremely rich set of strategies. Plus (this is big), it has a built-in handicap system that allows novices to play games against very advanced players. Minor plus, the board can be scaled down to allow faster games.

I've seen it being played, in a couple of movies... but i did the same with 3d chess.
Is "Go" really a game?

Go is a real game. I've got two or three boards in the very room I'm typing in. I prefer it to chess too, mostly for the reasons MikeB said.

I think I wasn't bad at it, years ago, but since I've been out of it I think I would have trouble with solitaire chess.

Is "Go" really a game?

Yes, it's real. It's not all that popular in the US (or Europe, I believe), but very popular in Eastern Asia. Japan has many professional players, newspaper columns, etc., similar to chess in US/Europe.

There are a few computer versions, to give you an adjustable (and patient) opponent, in case you want to try it. Google is your friend.

For those of you who are good chess player, which strategy would you recommend for learning the game? I know the rules, I've been playing occasionally, but I suck at it and I wish to improve my skills. Are there books about strategies or you really must play a lot of games and get experience in time? If so, does playing with a computer help?

Been jamming on chess since late 2nd grade primary school.

I got into the Chess team at school but was thrown out due to bad behaviour. I played for half my life but cannot stand the game now. My passion for it is now limited to those 2D challenges you find in magazines.
I once built the multi layered Chess board as seen in Star Trek out of perspex from a vandalised telephone kiosk, but hardly played it. I gave it away to a friend was did enjoy it though.

I don't miss the game at all.
