Hi everybody,

time for another thread oin the Off-Topic Section. In 2003 and again last week I came across something which I already back then designated as "bogus".

In 2003 I was curious, whether there are any biological experiments (because we were only doing experiments in Physics and Chemistry in school) and if there would be any instrument measuring anything biological.

One of the first hits was something called Biometer. The website about it had some crazy numbers and such things, and I left it afer viewing it about 30 seconds.

Last week I wanted to find out, whether this stuff is still online, and bingo: The same website popped up.

Now, what is a Biometer: Nothing more than a cardboard scale with the so-called "Bovis-Units", named after the inventor Bovis. First problem is, that nobody ever designated what 1 Bovis is. There are some crazy attempts to connect them to the wavelenghts of visible light but no final definition.

To measure the Bovis-Units of a given sample of something, the sample is placed at one end of this scale, and then the "operator" of the "instrument" swings a pendulum (!!!) over the scale. Where the pendulum balances out, the correct number of units is given. Also, the pendulum should be made of quartz, to save energy (!).

As, I said: Complete Bogus! Fortunately we were shown in school by a little experiment, that movements of a pendulum are induced by unconscious movements of the hand of the person who holds the thing. As you know, your hands always shudder a bit due to the muscles being "on". And if you think of a certain pattern (like a ring), your muscles will start to move slightly and the pendulum starts to move like following a ring. But the movements are so small that you don't notice your hand moving, and the pendulums movement appears like coming from nowhere.

Here is the website I discovered in 2003 (In German only, unfortunately):

Here, somebody sells this cardboard scale for 19 GBP!:

And some critcal words from Wikipedia:

I just wanted to show you that and ask you about your opinion on the Biometer.
