I am having a bit of a problem with the camera in orbiter 2010 P1 and AMSO. I have the camera set to ground target locked (even "unlocked" is a problem) the Saturn V launches and the camera follows the rocket as it passes by. Now the camera is looking straight up at the nozzles of the Saturn V and this is where I am stuck. I don't seem to be able to move the camera from "ground" to "ship" anymore.

Why is the camera so difficult to use in Orbiter? I also can't seem to get any "fly-by" shots either.

It isn't!

To switch off ground camera, from the camera dialog click on the track tab, and then any of the cameras there. Alternately, you can just click F2 while outside of your vessel and that'll switch you to one of the tracking views.

For flybys you'll either need to position the ground camera higher off the ground in the path of your vessel. Really only practical for right above the pad, like top of the launch tower. Or, use this: [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3657"]Orbiter Fly-By Camera[/ame]

For easy, messy flyby views: orbit the camera to "look back" at the ship. Typically during launch this camera orientation would have you looking at the nose cone. Then use the mouse wheel to move the camera away from the vessel. Then in the camera dialog box select "current position" from ground tracking camera type. The camera will suddenly stop moving and the craft will fly by in a dramatic fashion.

This is all way easier than it might sound written out like this. The whole process can be done in about 2 seconds when you get used to doing it. The best part is you can see multiple fly bys after the first one by simply pressing f2, then clicking the camera button again, ad nauseam.

You can also do cool distant fly bys this way, or really far away ones that go slower

P.s. make sure the camera is stationed on your parent body otherwise you'll see the whole planet flyby

P.s.s. F2, F8, and H are your super good view friends. Probably my most pressed non-keypad keys

Thanks guys, for your quick response. I am in the process now of learning these functions to make movies.

I have 2 new issues, changing to "ground" camera with menu, is there no keyboard shortcut, I am forced to pause and un-pause the sim?

I am also having problems with stage separations causing the target to zoom in on the camera during the actual separation.

F4 will bring up the menu. From there you can select CAMERA and choose whatever viewpoint you want. this is covered in the manual.

Which addon? it may well be written in the DLL but without knowing which addon you're referring to it's hard to help.

Thanks for replying so quickly. I use the keyboard shortcut ctrl + F1 for camera control. What I meant to say was, is there a keyboard shortcut to select the ground camera as F2 selects Vessel camera once in ground view( I believe) without having to bring up the camera menu?

The camera should just be adjusting to the new size of your vessel.

Orbiter is great but the external views are way too difficult. You see a rocket on a launch pad and want to rotate around it? The view rotates upside down. Different view mode (F2): the view rotates upside down. Control plus arrows: view rotates upside down. Fixed point? No rotate. IMHO the developer should implement Google Earth kind of free camera controls. Rotate around an object, moving the camera up/down, but keeping the horizon horizontal.
