This is horrific.

The site was a museum of Orbiter addons from the past. Destroyed.....

I do hope the FBI does get involved. This was not a "LuL Hax!11" Attack. It was a serious attack with the intent to destroy. If the individual or group is not hunted down it will likely lead to bolder attacks in the future.

I agree that the person or persons involved in this and the attack on SimNASA need to be hunted down. They were malicious and hurt the entire community, including those folks who put their own blood, sweat, tears, and tireless devotion of their own free time to this hobby so many of us enjoy. For those people who have spent money to host our hobby, it is nothing less than a personal attack. Sorry if I seem to rant a bit, but this still pisses me off.

As they didn't have a backup it seems that it is lost, but they'll probably be able to piece things back together somehow.

Right behind you - don't look!

I wouldn't hold my breath for the Feds to get involved. They didn't kill the server of a major corporation and there is not drugs/kiddie porn/terrorism involved.

Putting a bounty on them heads, on the other hand...

Some people take too much notice of hackers, which is exactly what they want. Instead, we basically have to complain the stupidity of those who did not take much care of external backups and who handled the whole thing almost careless.

Backing up everything online and just maintain all the data on one single place is the most stupiest thing to do. Not only because of hackers, but also because of fire and water damage. Years of work and memories can be lost just within moments. My work of Project Apollo (but also any of my NASA stuff which consists of thousands of photos and some hundreds documents, collected over years) rests on two online sources, on an external hard drive at home and on another storage medium in a safe of my bank (all updated about once a month). The chance that my data gets lost equals almost 0% if there is not a doomsday.

I still can't believe how all the AVSIM stuff was backed up, which was actually not at all.

Would people pay attention. The file library itself is assumed to be intact. It's just the front end and the forums that died.

Hackers are an important part of the modern IT eco-system, they teach you the value of correct backup procedures and security protocols. They generally do a thorough job and everyone graduates with an A+ sooner or later. Sometimes summer-school is held for the laggards; but they catch up too.

I for one am happy to have them. I will give you a second or third chance to pass your class. I will educate you. And every damaged system is a business opportunity.

Sorry to burst your bubble, we don't need hackers to tell us the importance of backups. Human error and equipment failure do that well enough already.

Let's see... I am sure there is some good that hackers do do, for example in the way of security, however I remember a world where hackers didn't exist, and age of no viruses, no spam, no mailware or spyware, an age of the BBS..... Of course there will be those that will argue that because of hackers we have hundreds of thousands of jobs for people to develop applications to prevent people like them from getting to systems, etc... On the other hand, without them just think of the many hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars we could of saved let alone all those important files that were lost, deleted or stolen.

As a side note....SimNASA is back up.... Here is to looking that AVSIM is back up soon as well.

Happy to have hackers? Well, if you want to call those vandals who did this hackers, then I have to say I disagree. They are an unnecessary blight and give a bad name to the word. A true hacker is there for the freedom of the signal, thr truth of the information. Not some ne'rdowell who calls himself a hacker just because he can use a few script tools and destroy someone's work because he thinks it's "cool" to do so.

I agree that human error, equipment failure and natural disasters are enough of a cause for good backup. I don't so much remember a world without hackers as I remember a world where such senseless crap was not tolerated by the hacking world. Those who called themselves hackers back then took great pains not to destroy but to simply access. And they would not have considered such targets as Avsim or SimNASA as the pinnicale of success, since these are not major corporations or government organizations... they'd have hacked the real NASA, or Lockheed or the Federal Reserve, because these are the real challenges. These people who attacked our communities are artless boffuns trying to make a name for themselves. </soapbox>

YAY for SimNASA being back up!!!

Unfortunately the word "hacker" not only may be misunderstood, but often misused. In many cases attacks are committed by lamers, not "hackers".

The good news is that 90% of the File Library is recoverable. And the even better news is that all FSX and FS9 files are intact.

Let that be a lesson to those who operate the server and "backup" all the data.

From AVSIM regarding the file library:

a) 45163 files checked
b) 2256 files with known corruption (positively confirmed as bad MD5)
c) 389 files which may be corrupt (cannot match data in database)
d) 3828 files for which we do not have MD5 data (old files)
e) 39548 files which are definitely OK with matching valid MD5sums

"we fully expect the legacy library system to be up and operational within the next 7 to 10 days"

Today, will be the beginning. As AVSIM has been hit we can be next. I will be making a defense program to defend us, AVSIM, and every other site from hacks! I need helpers so this program can be made. Mods, make a forum for the construction of this anti-hacker program. It is Defense of Hackers. Note: It may double as an anti viral program. Also, I will find the hackers and send viruses into their computers destroying them. I have deadly viruses ready for when I find them.

So who's with me!
