Sebastian Vettel eventually took pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix after a dramatic qualifying session on Saturday, which was stopped three times after accidents.

In a scrappy final session the German took his Red Bull round in 1m 32.160s to hold off Jarno Trulli who did 1m 32.220s for Toyota. Lewis Hamilton secured the inside slot on the second row with 1m 32.395s for McLaren, displacing his friend Adrian Sutil in the Force India, who had recorded 1m 32.466s.

Brawn drivers among five hit with Suzuka grid penalties

Brawn GP’s Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, Force India’s Adrian Sutil, Renault’s Fernando Alonso and Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi will all drop five places on the grid for Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix.

The first four drivers were penalised by Suzuka race stewards for failing to slow adequately when yellow flags were shown following Buemi's accident near the end of Saturday's Q2 qualifying session.

The accident littered the circuit with debris and Buemi was also reprimanded for impeding other drivers and driving back to the pits with a damaged car.

Sutil had qualified fourth, Barrichello fifth, Button seventh, Buemi 10th and Alonso 12th. The full provisional grid will be published by the FIA on Sunday morning
