Launch News SpaceX Falcon 9 v1.1 with DSCOVR, February 11, 2015

Can someone explain why the launch window for DSCOVR is only 1 second? It's not like the Lagrange points are moving around (relative to Earth).

    Rocket Science For Amateurs (RSFA)

I don't really know. The list of starting points into RSFA is pretty conjectural at the moment, and was intended to inspire folks like you. Is it working? Any or all of that material should fit in with the RSFA theme of helping new Orbinauts to learn the ropes. Feel free to add whatever...

    Rocket Science For Amateurs (RSFA)

Happy New Year 2015 to all Orbinauts! To celebrate, I’d like to open a new section of the Orbiter Wiki. I call it Rocket Science For Amateurs (RSFA). My hope is that the Orbiter community’s many experienced members can help to create a place for our less-experienced members to learn about...

General Question Unable to change cockpit views with F8

Do other function keys work? On some laptop keyboards, there is a separate "fn" (or similar) key that affects the way function keys are interpreted by the system, similar to a shift or control key. If this is the issue, there is likely a system setting to let you control how function keys are...

    Hardware Shopping for a Laptop...

Have you tried running Orbiter using BootCamp on the Mac? That's what I use (MacBook Pro 2011), and it works pretty well. The laptop keyboard isn't suitable for Orbiter, so I use an external USB keyboard and mouse.

Updates Orbital Sciences' Cygnus CRS Flight 1 through Flight 8 updates.

Trust is quantifiable. That's what insurance companies do. Does anyone have any sources for insurance coverage/rates for the various launch companies/countries/vehicles?

Software Orbiter 2010 working properly in Ubuntu Linux

Does anyone here know if the Orb::Connect::Web 3.19 add-on works within a Wine app (either Mac or Linux)? It sets up an http server on port 38888, and I don't know if Wine supports that.

That's right. Opening a menu stops the flickering.

Software How to Install Orbiter 2010 on Mac OS X

The following video modes are listed for me: Wine D3D7 T&L HAL Direct3D HAL Wine D3D7 RGB Wine D3D7 T&L HAL (Intel(R) Ivybridge Mobile) Direct3D HAL (Intel(R) Ivybridge Mobile) Wine D3D7 RGB (Intel(R) Ivybridge Mobile) All of them give me severe flickering in full-screen. Using Wine D3D7...

Software How to Install Orbiter 2010 on Mac OS X

Hi bpops, Thank you for posting your Wineskin Winery tutorial. I've used Parallels Desktop and BootCamp with Windows XP, but BootCamp under Mavericks doesn't support XP, and I don't want to buy Windows 7/8 just to run Orbiter. I'm on a MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2012, with wired Apple Keyboard with...

News We probably won't be going to Mars anytime soon.

We talk about centrifugal force, but I seldom see anything about coriolis forces in a rotating spacecraft. An effective "1-g" of centrifugal force can be achieved with a variety of radius and rotation rate, but I suppose they would all "feel" different due to coriolis effects. For instance, the...

    Orbiter Experience

As with life in general, Orbiter experience is not one-dimensional. We seek our experiences for different reasons, and enjoy different aspects of the Orbiter world. So I find little value in the idea of a single scale by which to judge experience. Certainly there are very knowledgeable and...

News Mars One - settlement funded via reality TV in 2023

I'm willing to risk it . . . . . . the charge of necro-posting, that is. Here's an interesting blog by one of the 1,058 applicants who've made it past the first round of selections: http://lifeonmars.me I also found this page on the Mars One site interesting, where they give their vision of...

    Updates ISS UPDATES

I found the MDM explanation very informative. I saw reference to the "Big 12" failures that astronauts are trained to repair, including this article: http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a567329.pdf However, I haven't been able to find a specific list of the failures. Does anyone have the...

    Tell us about yourself!

I've been around for a while, but thought I'd share something personal. I recently wrote a mini-memoir about programming the proof-of-concept planetary rover at JPL, in 1972. The story is at http://castleknob.com/generation-zero Here's a pic of the robot, from a Blender model I made and...

Ranking system with two score variables

The SPECmark approach to benchmarking computer systems used something like the following: Given N measured quantities and their corresponding 'standards', make N ratios, e.g., measured/standard1, measured/standard2, etc. In your case, N is 2 for DV and TOF. Multiply the ratios, and take the...
