XR-2 Reentry 2011-06-12

Splashscreen.png

This is a series of scenarios designed to let you jump into a re-entry anywhere along the way.
Requires Shuttle Fleet V4.5
and
XR-2 Ravenstar 1.2
README:
These Scenarios are sort of checkpoints through a GPC-guided reentry of the XR-2.
These use the GPC MFD provided in the Shuttle Fleet V4.5 mod to guide the XR-2 Ravenstar.
It's a good idea to read the GPC MFD and XR-2 Ravenstar's documentation. It will help, but I think I included everything necessary here in this readme. You should at least know how to use the GPC MFD.
You should use OPS 3 in every scenario. The first 5 scenarios you should also use Surface MFD, but the last 2 surface should be replaced with GPC OPS 4 to guide you in on the final approach.
Each description will list T minus time until wheelstop (as I played it).
The GPC OPS 3 display tracks downrange distance to KSC for the vertical, and the horizontal is your energy, your trajectory should follow the green lines. If you're above the center of the green lines, you need to lose energy more quickly, so descend faster (increase negative vertical speed). If you're below trajectory, you need to save energy, so try to hold your descent rate at 0, or even climb if necessary, until you're back on trajectory.
In some cases the situation may call for a "skip", where you skip off the atmosphere like a pebble on a pond. To do this, simply adjust your pitch so that you get a large amount of lift, and your vertical speed becomes positive. I've done this with 140 m/s, it's a risky, but sometimes necessary maneuver. Keep an eye on the altitude when you perform one of these, it's all too easy to climb too high. If that happens, you'll come in at too steep of an angle. Skips are dangerous and should only be performed near the end of re-entry as necessary. It's best to avoid them if possible.
Remember inverse flight logic: higher angle of attack to fall faster. Lower angle of attack to increase your lift. This works because the air detaches from your wing so easily at supersonic/hypersonic speeds. You get the most lift usually around 15* AoA or so.
Some of the levels may not load with the MFD's properly set up, so it's a good idea to turn on the "start paused" option at the top-right of the scenario selection screen. Not to mention it's a good idea to take a moment to understand the situation before starting the scenarios where you start with the heat shield hot.
