This is really annoying and I'm not sure how people manage to do it. Is there a better way? Do you really need constant corrections for the RInc?

I would recommend using TransX or IMFD. If you want to use Sync MFD, it is best to orient yourself prograde, and then use translation RCS to correct both DTmin (thrust left and right) and RInc (thrust up and down).


Also, can you please tell me where I'm supposed to dock?

Since the Tranzit uses a grappling system to dock, you can dock wherever you like.

I would recommend using TransX or IMFD.
Is there a IMFD tutorial for space station rendezvous?

I did practice runs for #8 using TransX -- I can post info how to use TransX to intercept the station.

I was referring to the Target's AgP not the PeA. When you are at right angles to your own AgP (i.e. when MnA is 90 or 270), in Prograde orientation, you can do forward or backward translation to move your AgP around to align with the target. My thinking is the more closely you match the orientation of the target's eccentric orbit (albeit say 50km lower average altitude so you still catch up), then you should increasingly align to the same perturbations as the target.

Use LaunchMFD to launch into a parking orbit coplanar with the target.

Bring up TransX (enjos version). In setup view, press VAR to set Target, then ADJ to switch from Planets/Moons to Spacecrafts. Press +++ and set target to OFSS. Switch to maneuvre mode.

Now the idea is that you are doing a Hohmann transfer from parking orbit to OFSS. Add about 150m/s prograde vel. so that the yellow ellipse touches the target orbit. Adjust Man. Date to minimize Cl.App -- the required launch window is about half a day in the future. You should be able to get Cl. App below 1km. If your RInc is non-zero, add some Ch. Plane vel.

Now warp time forward. You will notice that Cl.App increases -- that is caused by LAN precession due to nonspherical gravity sources. Dont worry. Go out of warp about 30 minutes before maneuver. Readjust Man. Date (use Hyper or Ultra mode), Prograde Vel. and Ch. Plane Vel. You should be able to get Cl.App within 5km.

Switch to maneuver view, enable Auto-Center. In other MFD, start BurnTimeCalc. Press GET. Maneuver date and deltav will be copied from TransX. Press DV and enter the value of DeltaV displayed an TransX screen -- it gets copied incorrectly. Press ARM. Dont warp. Get a coffee.

After the burn disable maneuver mode in TransX. If all goes well Cl.App should be within 20 km of the station. If not, use TransX to plan a midcourse correction.

On approaching the station switch HUD to docking mode. Rotate spacecraft so it points at -V marker. You have about 250m/s to kill so start the burn when the distance is Cl.App plus 10 km. Bring the relative velicity near zero.

Now forget orbital mechanics and simply fly to the station.

@ Pipcard, something I just wanted to point out was that, ensure that you get your RInc as close to 0 as possible. Even a small difference can result in a high relative velocity during the closing phase. Although your closest approach might go out to 2km on doing this, it can be corrected with your RCS, later on in the flight.

Thanks I wrote it from memory on my phone while travelling today...

The problem is that even if you manage to get RInc=0 after launch, the LAN precession during waiting in parking orbit means RInc=0.05 at the time of injection into transfer orbit... Hence we end up doing an off-plane intercept if we want it or not...

I was thinking about purposedly launching into a parking orbit which has LAN off by 0.05 deg, so that I am at the right LAN at injection time... But the above strategy turned out to be sufficient under the mission constraints.

Another strategy would be to launch when OFSS is on the opposote site of the Earth - that should get you into a coplanar orbit 180 degrees behind the target, so you can do interception burn at apoapsis.

Also the reason I launch first into a 250km parking orbit was that attempting a direct insertion into 800km orbit would mean dropping first stage of HCLV on Canada... I like Canada too much :)

That's a problem with almost all launch sites on the planet. Certain orbits will drop stages on dry ground. It's one of the main selling points for single stage to orbit... no stages to drop on people.

(Note that the Tranzit is in a ~700 x ~700 km orbit in this practice scenario. The upper stage did the transfer orbit to 700 km, while the Tranzit did the circularization.)

My problem is that in a few seconds, it will be above 5 km again, continuously increasing and increasing. By the time I'm done with the burn, the Cl.App is a few hundred kilometers away for some reason.

edit2: I had already tried it with a ~350 km parking orbit. It was supposed to add 150-200 m/s of prograde velocity, but the target view showed ~400 m/s instead. It was about a 5 minute burn, and after that, the apoapsis was above 1000 km, the periapsis was below 200 km, and that's when I got the Cl.App that was a few hundred km.

Can anyone please give me an IMFD tutorial?

To add, the reason you have to keep updating the TransX plan is because of orbital perturbations caused by nonspherical gravity sources.

With nonspherical gravity turned off, it's enough to fly the initial plan, and you'll intercept the target perfectly.

This looks like a lot of fun. I don't know that my Orbiter skills are up to snuff at this point, but it's something I might like to participate in in the future (if it happens again.) Just curious what's the best way to practice? Download and try the launch scenarios? I can passably launch, orbit, rendezvous, dock, occasionally de-orbit successfully, etc. I'm not an especially fuel efficient pilot, and I don't really understand how payload integration or the necessary config editing works.

That said, please sign me on as a backup pilot (with a learner's permit) for any of the remaining missions, provided I can ask lots of questions should it be necessary that I fly one:)

That is, in fact, the best way to practice. Take a known good scenario with documented expectations and fly the crap out of it. As you learn you will become more efficient.

If you want to leave the 'realism' factors out, it will be much easier, but it can be quite rewarding once you switch them on.

For the de-orbit, take a look at oceanic's tutorial using basesync and aerobrake MFD. They are written using the DG-IV, but work the same with the XR-x fleet http://orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?t=8425 It was a tremendous help to me when I first had troubles with re-entry.

I'd love to make this OFSS IV into a learning experience for any pilot. It's pretty neat to be able to do a sequence of flights building a whole space station.

Try fighting through each mission in sequence, and ask any questions you want to get the hang of it. I started a documentation thread, but I cut it due to lack of feedback. Happy to resurrect it if you want though.

I saw what you had so far, and it looked pretty good. You may want to continue with it just for your own benefit, in case you want to run these missions again in a few months (years maybe?). Or if you are working on your own future project, to see how something was done with this one, and mimic the process.

Payload integration is actually very easy, and amounts to clicking around in the scenario editor. I was able to figure it out by myself... The general way is this:

- open scenario editor
- add a launch vehicle (i.e. Themis, HCLV)
- add a payload (i.e. BM210 module)
- select the launch vehicle, click edit, click on payload manager, select payload, adjust attachment location so it is sitting in the right place...

You can even have payloads on payloads (i.e. BM210 sitting on DM tug sitting on HCLV -- that's going to be mission #8).

I started a documentation thread, but I cut it due to lack of feedback. Happy to resurrect it if you want though.

By all means, please continue! I've read what you have produced so far and it seems to be great for beginners.

But that doesn't work for Vinka's Multistage-based or Sputnik's Velcro-based rockets, like my M-II. Those require manual editing of config and scenario files. Since I don't know how to program at all, I can't do that fancy payload manager stuff.

If you have the Multistage and/or Velcro Rockets plug-ins installed, look in the "add-on docs" folder for their respective manuals. You can also check my manual for the M-II in Doc\M-II + Negi-5, if you have it installed.
