Holy god.

For five hours on 28 July about 4,000 players took part in the epic battle between two of the game's biggest alliances.

The two sides were fighting for control of resources within several of the game's solar systems.

Time was slowed down in the virtual universe to help servers cope with the huge numbers of players and ships.

Since a lot of activities are moved into virtual space I don't see nothing wrong with it. It's the same as news report of big music festival.

I watched a few minutes of this one. There were many Twitch channels covering it.
Last time there was something like this in EVE, there were the equivalent of "$20,000 in losses for the losing team." (I see this article says $15k+)

Let's agree to disagree.

It's a frakking game. Not a news event. I just made 2 millions points in Missile Command. Call Fox News!

It is interesting as a new report since it has an impact on the real world economy. Now imagine a financial crisis in the real world triggered by a political event in a virtual world... :hmm:

Why we have news reports about lotery winners? That's a game. Why we have news of major sports events? Those are games also. How EVE battle is different from F-1 race, Wimbledon tournament or NBA match?

Your going to need to invest serveral months if not years to actually get to the stage of being able to participate in something like this without getting blown into tiny little pieces in a single shot.

It's BBC Technology. How is an online game event technology?

It isn't BBC Sports or Entertainment.

Why do we have a fuzz for weeks about such a boring event like the Superbowl...

Hey, the main event there is the commercials. Gotta love being told to buy things. :p

They don't show them in German TV, they only show the German commercials there and show the US commercials afterwards... despite me really liking to know what we tell you to buy from us.

But does somebody even remember the Volkswagen ads at the 2013 superbowl now?

(Subliminal message: Buy more German cars...buy more German cars...)

I wonder if the ambush mentioned in this article is the one where the starship that was destroyed cost the guy $9000 in real-world money?

I can't reach that article from work or I would post a link. I think it said he lost it in like 15 minutes.

Well, I did manage to find a little write-up on Forbes with a link to a video of the battle.

No surprise that the $9000 super carriers are hunted down... who wouldn't do so in real-world strategy?

EDIT: Just saw the video of the battle. I am no Eve player, so maybe I don't know enough for the expertise, but it feels like the $9000 didn't come with a tactical training, additionally to the strategical errors made there to not play safe enough that a traitor (Well, traitors have no friends) is enough. I would have slowly retreated to keep the distances for the attackers higher and let the smaller friends harass them. But when somebody is willed to loose ships worth multiples of the $9000 to kill just one of them, you can only loose in the long run.

The ambushing fleet contained several Heavy Interdiction Cruisers, fitted with warp disrupters, preventing the supercarrier from escaping via warp, and the main damage dealers had sufficient speed to keep up with the supercarrier (attackers: 70m/s, supercarrier: 60m/s)

Yes, that is what I expected, since a supercarrier is never the fastest in the field. But I meant is, using the retreating motion to force the opponents to maneuver themselves. In the video, the supercarrier was just standing still and firing against targets, instead of any evasive maneuver, that could permit him to last longer and deal more damage, maybe even buying time for reinforcements.

Are the battlefields in EVE limited in a significant way?

The result there was, that the attackers completely ignored the escorts and concentrated fire on the carrier. And the carrier ignored his own escorts by standing still and not maneuver...
