Sorry for going off topic here, but why do people call inhabitants of the United States of America for Americans, while America is the landmass from Canada in north to Chile in south. Shouldn't all people living in America be called Americans, instead of only 33 % them?

But anyway: happy birthday to all USA'ns out there.

That's why people refer to them as either "North Americans" or "South Americans", so that they're referring to the continents.

Nobody calls a person from Texas a "South American". (maybe [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_American_English"]Southern American[/ame])

Can't agree with this: wouldn't it be like saying "here's a system which has some flaws, let's put even less effort into it, this will surely improve the outcome!"?

There's another misunderstanding going on. I wasn't talking about Melvin; I was talking about the "American public school system" and how it also "agrees that the US [wasn't] founded 2013 years ago."

Well to be fair those tweets are representative of a very small slice of the American population. Do we know who they are? They could be young, or over-enthusiatic or yes, just dumb. But the point is there's no value in making statements based on these few tweets. It's a little like the 'Talking To Americans' bit Rick Mercer occasionally puts up on 'This Hour Has 22 Minutes', a CBC news parody. Funny as hell...Americans answer ridiculous questions about false Canadian issues. It looks initially like Americans are ignorant but not really. Americans are outgoing and eager to help - and to provide an opinion, of course. With a camera and microphone in their face they often don't think hard about what they're being asked; few ordinary folk can; particularly when Rick Mercer - an accomplished, persuasive and highly charismatic political comedian who can easily pass as a legitimate journalist - is holding the mike. (And of course, it's carefully edited.) It's gentle humour at the expense of our Southern friends but don't mistake it for a demonstration of American stupidity. And the same applies to those tweets - they're funny but don't mistake them for examples of a bad education system - though America's education system is notoriously inefficient - they're just examples of thinking before speaking.

Yes there is. But someone on this site has a tagline that denies cynicism as wisdom - I can't find it right now. I love America and her people. I don't love her politics or policy; that's a different issue. I would rather love than hate; rather explore differences than fight about them. I've done too much fighting in my life. I can choose to focus on things about America I dislike; I did that in my youth. But I can also choose to focus on all the things that makes America great, delightful and wonderful. I choose the latter. It makes dealing with the (shudder) NFL much easier. :thumbup:
