Meteorite sparks search and rescue mission
A meteorite crashing at great speed into the sea sparked a search and rescue mission after stunned onlookers believed it was a plane.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service responded after a pilot was among several who reported what they thought was an aircraft crashing into the sea at Whitstable.
After fire-fighters from Whitstable and Herne Bay searched the area, no trace of the aircraft could be found.
Air traffic controllers told rescue crews they did not have any planes missing, so the search was called off and recorded as a meteorite falling to Earth.
A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two independent calls came in reporting a plane had crashed off the coast.
"Even a pilot who was looking out of his window reported a plane was in distress and had gone into the sea.
"Fishermen in the area also reported seeing something, but in the end nothing was found and it was put down to a meteorite falling to Earth."
Hundreds of meteorites streaked across the sky this weekend as the Earth passed through a cloud of dust left by behind by a comet called Giacobini-Zinner.
Must have been a big slow moving one

nope, it was a UFO :P i dont see why they didnt search the floor for the debris/meteorite

Is it a bird? Nooooooo
Is it a plane? Noooooo
Is it Superman? Nooooo
Is it an Alien? Yessssss!

this is not too far from me and I've heard that there were several false alarms due to meteors. Kent Police & Kent Fire and Resuce said that they would rather have false alarms than not be there to rescue a real person in distress.

because it's pointless:

1. It's not the smoothesh waters.

2. Dover is a MASSIVE sea port.

3. You are talking very, very small shards.

Ok, i figured something to warrant several 911 calls would be big enough to have some large debris.:tiphat:

UK doesn't use 911 and it wasn't big enough to LEAVE debris, thats the point. It just streaked across the sky in such a way that people thought it was a flare.

They have 999 in the UK, but any call such as this would be screened and forwarded to the Torchwood Institute anyway. I hope they don't approach the meteorite impact point, they should have learned something from doctor Quatermass, shouldn't they?
