Swing back wings on a commerical plane? That would have been quite a sight to see but wow... that nose looks insanely complex and failure prone.

Sure but not in commerical service anymore. John Travolta owns and flies one personally.

Swept wings were never efficient enough to be practical in any plane. They were always too heavy and complex. That's why you don't see any swept wing planes today, they aren't very cost-efficient.

I hope you meant variable-sweep wing not swept wing :thumbup:

EDIT: Not to mention the Concord was a delta-wing design :rolleyes:

Concorde was neither efficient nor practical (at least from an operations standpoint), albeit awesome. :lol:

Unfortunately, there's the big problem with operating SSTs which is almost unavoidable...the sound...and it's a really serious problem... :rolleyes:
Even the premise of Boeing's Sonic Cruiser was dashed by this (and another one of my childhood dreams, sigh~).
Sad, but in the end, an SST that can only cruise over oceans is just not practical. I'm not saying we'll never get another SST, but I don't think it's likely any time soon.

Well, enough of my rant. :shifty:

Not really, no. Travolta lives out in the middle of nowhere (so not exactly "rubbing it in anyone's face"), and shares the airport with several others, like any airport community (although, to be fair, their houses are much smaller :P )

Sonic boom problem is avoidable. The nose and rear has to be shaped to dissipate the boom or the aircraft has to fly high enough such that there isn't enough air to worry about the boom reaching the ground.

I saw a quick interview with him when he landed in Sydney Airport. he spoke to the camera for about a minute before saying 'excuse me, I have to take care of landing fees, customs and immigration'.

Proves that just because he is wealthy he still has to go through the same processes as anyone else.

Variable geometry aircraft are used to solve problems like

. long takeoff and landing distances.
. low speed handling of super sonic aircraft.
. CG and CL shift issues at trans-sonic speeds

The reason they are not used on modern aircraft, is that fly by wire technology can make "a brick fly" if set up correctly.

I love variable-geometry wings... It's one of those really awesome feature, that evetually gets replaced by more efficient, but less interesting technology...

Anyone remember the jet featured in Tintin's Flight 714? It was simply called Golf-Tango-Fox in the comic, but it was really cool, and had variable sweep wings... come to think of it, this feature would go really well in a new generation of supersonic private jets:
