im sure im not the only one to think about this, i would just love to play orbiter with a tad more realism, having the 3D option that even minecraft has would be great. as long as players have there own 3d glasses or means of getting them its all good. please someone with the power to do it, just think of the possibilities

I believe the OGLA graphics client implemented a stereoscopic 3D effect. Additionally, some graphics drivers can be commanded to produce that effect within Orbiter, as for instance my current Nvidia drivers.

i wonder how that works though.. if it was a simple orbiter module for sterioscopic 3D that could be changed to match whatever 3D glasses people have or prefer. docking in 3D would look great and might even be better than it is now. and being able to visually judge distance

That works by instructing the card to draw each scene twice, once for the left eye and once for the right. It's the oldfashioned red/(green/blue) glasses type of 3D, and as far as I know OGLA's implementation works in a similar fashion.

Given that it's a driver-level switch, the advantage is that hardware compatibility is not a consideration. :)

Is there any point? Once in orbit only your immediate cockpit would appear 3D. Everything else is at infinity optically.

All the necessary 3d info is already present, orbiter sends all that info to the graphics card driver. It is the job of the card driver to convert that info into a 2d bit-map image that can be displayed on the screen.

I've done orbiter in 3d years ago, with a tnt2-ultra card. This is stone-age computing!

Besides, 3d isn't all what its cracked up to be.

And this file for some 3-D screen-grabs from Orbiter made in 2003:

In my opinion 3-D is very cool and useful, and lots of FUN :D

OGLA doesn't really work for me, I get 20 min load times and 0.2 fps. A nice, small module would be great.

So what? The cockpit is nice enough. Also, imagine flying around KSC or docking in "three-dee"!!
