What kind of add-on do you think would change Orbiter forever?

If it hasn't been listed yet....a highly simplified HD ap version for my I-Pod!

Launch, get into orbit, and reentry/land. Sync and dock with the ISS would be cool but probably asking for too much.

Maybe two ships built in. The DG and one proposed near future "real space" vehicle.

Couldn't resist. Stuck with my I-Pod and no computer this week.

The only problem with that is that Martin would have to be very generous to have it free, iPod dev software isn't exactly cheap.

What? The iPod dev environment is free, it's just a $99 fee to be able to publish things, I believe.

The real problem is that it would probably require a full rewrite of the sim, from scratch, and Objective-C isn't a very happy language.

Is it free? I was sure you had to pay for it...

Orbiter has too much windows-depending stuff to be published on any other pletform without rewriting a good deal of it.

Not only that - the processing power of an iPod isn't enough to handle the complex demands of orbit stability. Most mobile devices run on a fairly low power ARM chipset, it has to be low power because anything high power kills battery life and your consumers protest.

Imagine having 3G, Wifi, bluetooth enabled then fire up orbiter iPod. Your battery life would last about 20 minutes.

Anyway, I digress. Orbiter on Apple IOS, Android, Symbian, Windows mobile or Meego isn't really an option.

Actually this is a great idea: orbPod. Shipped as a rad-hardened, 15g resistant variant, with velcro straps and a plug for external cooling loop...

Would the batteries survive in a vacuum?
Would the Mission Controllers get a tad pissed when somebody takes five to play while on a walk?

When I posted the the thought of an I-Pod ap, I figured there's probably a number of young code savy folks in this community that know a LOT more than I on the subject...

I figured, hey, roll out the original version, reengineer the thing...remember, I don't know what's involved on coding. Get back to basics and do away with a lot of the MFD functions we like. Rotation/translation can largely be delt with by twisting and rocking the device, the touch screen can have a bunch of buttons for basics or layers of commands. MFD's would be minimal (loaded line for sure).

I assumed no support for interplanetary, UMMU, or most of the addons we take for granted today, etc, etc. Just the basics to make it let you launch, make orbit, maaaybbbee dock, and do a controled reentry to land. Combined with the HD graphics to make it look sexy and generate some sales to help out Martin and the community.

I suppose extra self contained versions based on the same platform could be made to allow for a landing on the moon or other body missions, or earth to moon missions or something similar.

Regardless, it's fun to see the thought generate some discussion!

Thanks! Here's to reducing some of the boredom and tedium of travel.

Since Orbiter is not open source, reverse-engineering it would actually be a criminal act.

The only thing you're left with is re-writing a similiar aplication from scratch, whcih is not only a monumental, but also rather silly task for the pure sake of having a comparable app hand held. You'll be far better off just tailoring a similiar programm specific for the targetted platform, in which you can take the limitations into account from the beginning. That wouldn't be orbiter, of course, but then again there's no way that an IPhone can run a complete orbiter. But if things go on like this, we might have IPhones with MacOSX and virtual windows within the next decades, so you'll just have to wait :p

I laughed my ass off because of this!

this idea is incredibly hilarious, especially if someone made an addon of it for an UMMU to play  :tiphat:

Yes but it lags terribly on my computer and AFAIR it's very creator said that it's obsolete.

:n00b:..........just joking. Sorta. I would like if Jupiter was made of gas and if you went near the sun you would start overheating.:hailprobe:

ORULEX is (kinda) obsolete (but it still works very nicely in 2010p1, at least for me), OGLA certainly isn't. That's just not quite finished yet.
Allthough, it seems that Orulex might have a revival...

and for terribly lagging on your machine... well... What should I say? My CPU is over three years old now, and I don't get a single frame per second less when running with terrain. Maybe you should just get a better machine? Any other terrain implementation will certainly lag as well, becuase Orulex is one of the most efficient I've ever seen, at least when run on a multi-core CPU.

year I found a collision detection hat should work good on any computer, it's in this pack: [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3508"]Computerex Add-on Pack[/ame]

I haven't read through all the pages on this thread, so apologies if this has been mentioned. A time compression MFD that shows a simple display of significant time events and the ability to 'jump' to that time and have all your movement projected to that time. Essentially an instant time jump as opposed to running time compression. E.G. MFD shows X time to arrive at Jupiter, you can select to 'jump' to X-1 day to set up final approach, then use normal time compression to 'fly' into your arrival. Assumes of course your eject burn was uber accurate, but even jumping to .5X to jump to mid-way, correct, jump again to .75X, correct again, then X-1 day for approach. The key, again, is to have your movement projected forward instead of just changing the time in the scenario.
