Which measurement system you perfer?

WARNING (To the American and people who live in the US): Do NOT vote for metric just because of orbiter! It is highly recommended that you post a reason why you are familiar to that measurement system!

Metric. The Imperial system is completely illogical. 5280 feet in a mile?
I like how simple the metric system is. 10 centimeters in a decimeter. 10 decimeters in a meter. 1000 meters in a kilometer, etc, etc.

Metric. It's base 10, so it's easy as hell to work with. Unfortunately, it'll never catch on in the US unless someone with a bigger army forces us to use it.

Why is 10 "more logical" than 5280? They're both just numbers. ;-)

Anyway, I work in the engineering world, so I "prefer" metric for most things.

But when I'm driving, for instance, I prefer English/Imperial/SAE/whatever-it's-called-nowadays. Miles are longer than kilometers and thus better suited to long-distance travel.

Mainly, though, it's just a comfort thing. You like what you're accustomed to. It's alike asking which language "is better". Obviously, whichever one you speak the easiest.

I don't know how old you are but the US government made an attempt to switch us over to metric back in the 70s. It was a major failure.

The US is still technically on the metric system, which is why you have mixed numbers in aviation--degrees celsius, but feet altitude. There's actually a few lines in the Practical Test Standards book about how everything can be metric...

Customary! And here's why, I was brought up on it, my parents were, their parents were, and so on and so forth. It's one of the things that makes America great. See my thread if your interested in making Orbiter a customary simulator:

http://www.orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?t=10146&highlight=metric

And 5280 + 5280 = 10560 ;)!
Not really, it's one of the things that make America stubborn and represents in itself our refusal to cooperate with the rest of the world...

I'll flip this around: Why is the imperial system better?

10 + 10 is 20
5280 + 5280 is umm...

errrr....

anyone got a calculator

Oh please. It'd be easy if you were raised on a base 5280 number system instead of base 10!

No, it's not. It's one of the things that makes America (as in United States of) unique. Not great.

Not really, it's one of the things that make America stubborn and represents in itself our refusal to cooperate with the rest of the world...

I see it doesn't take long for someone to assign moral or political significance to this subject. Subjects like this are often all about your belief system.

Two words: Darth Vader.

Yes, I can understand the green sign, because I drive here.

I also have some understanding of the metric system because I learned it in school.

The metric system is better, and you have yet to provide an reason why it isn't.

I believe some things are either good or bad. The customary system is good. Socialism is bad. Because we refuse to cooperate is because we're unique and value it. I certainly do. If we change now, things will most likely fall apart.

Metric better for conversions and many other things.

Imperial is better for familiartiy. I've yet to hear a pilot announce that "we are flying at x hundred/thousand metres, it's always in feet and that's fine for me because I'm familiar with it. It is one of the areas where metric would confuse me.

Everything is good to someone and that exact same thing is bad to someone else. With 6billion people on the planet that is how it will be for everything.

This reminds me of an argument about Word vs. WordPerfect many years ago. That particular argument kinda fizzled out when someone proclaimed "WordPerfect is better because it has larger letters!!!!"

True story btw!
