The MEASAT-3a satellite was developed and built for MEASAT Satellite Systems by Orbital Sciences Corp of Dulles, US. The satellite will carry 12 Ku-band and 12 C-band active transponders along with three antennas. MEASAT-3a will serve C-band markets throughout the region with a global beam, while Ku-band beams will serve direct-to-home broadcasting markets on Malaysia and Indonesia. The satellite will be located at an orbital slot at 91.5 degrees East Longitude over Southeast Asia and will generate approximately 3.6 kilowatts of payload power.

Launcher: Zenit-3SLB with DM-SLB upper stage

proven_rocket_tech-2b.jpg

In place of the Boeing-made fairing used on Sea Launch, the Zenit-3SLB adopts a 4-meter fairing made by NPO Lavochkin. It is in current production and has been flight-proven with the Block DM.

Mission Profile

From the launch site at the Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan, a Zenit-3SLB launch vehicle will lift the 2,417 kg (4,448 lb.) MEASAT-3a spacecraft to geosynchronous transfer orbit, on its way to a final orbital location at 91.5 degrees East Longitude. The first stage will operate for two-and-a-half minutes and then jettison, followed by the jettison of the payload fairing three minutes later. After a six-minute burn, the second stage will separate from the Block DM-SLB upper stage. The Block DM will then begin the first of three burns, taking the spacecraft to a stable parking orbit. After a brief second burn, the upper stage will coast with the spacecraft for five hours, after which a third burn will inject the spacecraft into geosynchronous transit orbit. Eleven minutes later, the spacecraft will separate from the upper stage over the coast of Sumatera.

11-08-2008 Roscosmos establishes Measat-1R Failure Investigation Board

A special Board is established in Roscosmos to investigate the cause of the failure occured in the Measat-1R satellite. The satellite was damaged at Baikonur. Character of the damage is to be clarified. The satellite will undergo the number of specific checks. Then, the decision will be made about the repair and mitigation of the failure effect.

Thereby, launch of the Zenith-3SLB with Measat-1R aboard is postponed.

Launch in 40 minutes, right?

Exactly, I was almost late. :P

And I almost went to bed. And thanks, your coverage of the Russian launches is great.

Pre-launch videos

One really cool video of the payload assembly being transported over to the assembly building where it was mated with the Zenit-2SB rocket core:

Not posting them here just not to make this thread clumsy to load.

The launch video. Alas, there is no falling 1st stage caught on this vid.

Nice pics, wish I'd noticed this earlier.

No problem, usually the pc is on till I go to bed, and I keep a look-out for your launches. Yesterday I got so frustrated at some C++ I'm trying to get to work, I switched it off, and read a book.

No problem, guys - and ladies too!

So,
http://www.spacelaunchreport.com/

Liftoff from Area 45 Pad 1 occurred at 21:50 UTC, initiating a 6.4 hour long mission that included three planned third stage burns.

Measat 3a was targeted toward a 11,620 x 34,486 km x 10.63 deg transfer orbit. The communications satellite is owned by MEASAT Satellite Systems Sdn Bhd of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was manufactured by Orbital. It is based on Orbital's STAR-2 platform.

Measat 3a was damaged during launch processing at Baikonur in 2008, necessitating shipment back to the United States for repair.

It was the 3rd Land Launch mission, the 33rd Zenit 3 launch, and the 70th liftoff by a Zenit 2 or 3 since the first flight in 1985.

This launch has improved the current LV's reliability standing:
