True, but let's not pretend this was a pure science mission.

Who cares?

Let's not pretend that the Apollo missions were purely for science either. Or the ISS. Many government funded space missions, and manned ones in particular, have very strong political elements to them. Which is to be expected, since they cost a lot of money, and they're funded by the government.
