Exoplanet Beta Pictoris b orbiting β Pictoris star

Published on Sep 20, 2015

The star β Pictoris (Beta Pictoris) lies about 63 light-years from Earth in the southern constellation of Pictor (The Painter’s Easel). Planet Beta Pictoris b is a gas giant and astronomers captured the best view yet of an exoplanet moving in its orbit. The images, captured between November 2013 to April 2015, show β Pic b as it moves through 1 ½ years of its 22-year orbital period.
