ORBITER-FORUM will be temporarily closed at 2026-07-23 18:00 UTC while we complete some OF maintenance tasks. The amount of downtime is expected to take up to one hour, but probably less.
Real spacecraft do burn. Usually, they use thermal shielding because of that. The shield burns, protecting the actual spacecraft behind it.
Just look at Crew Dragon after landing. Crew Dragon reenters with the bottom facing the atmosphere, and that part is shielded. Looks completly black on the...
@asbjos your addon is still interesting, especially for these test missions using boilerplates. Boilerplates didn't have a cockpit - at most, they had a window and a camera or other instruments. And the maneuverable Mercury is unique and can work along BigMac's Mercury for a hypothetical capsule...
That water looks nice! A similar approach (using mask tiles) could be used on a future version of the D3D9 client to auto-generate random trees/rocks in certain areas...
You can add a few persons or cars to give scale. No need for any real details, some free low poly models will do.
Also, add a fence - an alpha textured rectangle will do. Your model will look alive and complete with these simple extras! :salute:
I based the model on two detailed matching orthographic views and photos of physical mockups. Details lined up nicely between these sources, so it seemed like a "stable" design configuration. My goal was more artistic than following any specific configuration.
I had a similar situation with...
Never tried them! From Orbiter's SDK manual:
4.2 The Mask layer
The Mask layer contains the planet water mask (for rendering specular reflection of
water surfaces) and the night light texture, if applicable, in a combined 512x512 pixel
DXT1 texture file (1-bit transparency). The RGB channels of...
Yes, that's the trick! I tried to explain it, but sometimes it's difficult to put into words!
Now try this:
Take your big level 14 "plate" and resize it 4X (add some fake detail just for testing). Import it on TT just as before and export.
Do you get the higher resolution levels ?
On my...
@jarmonik A new version would be great, but could you make R4.7 accessible somewhere? Or simply give me permission to upload it to OH as a legacy developer resource - on this case no extra work for you, and of course full credit will be given! I think it would be good to preserve all the tools...
Terrain Tool does that. You can control edge blending, and it generates all the needed levels, both down and up! :salute:
No, you should REALLY use it, because it does blending and level splitting / merging! (y)
There's a trick there, I'll explain:
1) On Terrain Tool first export the area you...
For extra perspective, look up the story about commercial TV and the 373, 441 and 576-line standards in the US around 1936-1940. The conflict between industry and regulators for approval of a single standard stalled regular broadcasts in America. It was entirely possible to build a multistandard...
@GB you can add pictures to the addon description just like you do with any other post. You can edit the description at any time, no need to reupload ;)
Addons use the same text editor as posts (because the system is fully integrated with the forum software (y) )
@N_Molson Terrain Toolkit works with an old D3D9 version (R4.7)...
The real problem with Orbiter is that sort of wasted effort - if D3D9 supported whatever was needed by TerrainTool, why was it removed?
And why isn't D3D9 R4.7 ( D3D9ClientR4.7-forOrbiter2016(r1335).zip ) available as a legacy...
