Project Obsidian - Outer Planets Explorer

Obsidian over Uranus moon Titania. New version 01 can be downloaded in the first post of this thread. The Osidian now got a dll and has few key commands. [E] Camera look forward or aft [G] Go ahead, change from stowed to active configuration (This is important to activate the reactor and main...

Project Obsidian - Outer Planets Explorer

Great tip, thank you! The picture above shows a lander incoming to the lava Lake at Io. Unfortunately, the lander spun out of control before touchdown. May have to do how the height above ground is interpreted in Orbiter 2024 vs Orbiter 2010. Will have a loser look into that.

Project Obsidian - Outer Planets Explorer

Paying a visit to the Sulphur volcanoes of Io. On the way into the Jupiter system had a near-miss with Europa at 100 x time acceleration. It whizzed by so fast I could not react. The Jupiter system is a treacherous place to navigate. Question: Are there addons of surface features on...

To adjust orbit, the Obsidian explorer is firing its ion engines over Enceladus, With the reactor at full power, a faint glow is visible on the radiator wings, to shed the excess heat.

Project Obsidian - Outer Planets Explorer

Obsidian Outer Belt Surveyor for Discovery, Imaging, and Analysis of Neptunian space The Obsidian is an unmanned space probe to explore the outer Solar system. It is powered by a nuclear-electric bus, can be configured with different science packages, and can carry up to two landers. Addon...

Problem My vessel DLL crashes on launch, but only sometimes

Try to initialize all variables in clbkSetClassCaps (). Leave none un-intitalized. It could be sometimes uninitialized variables are 0, sometimes some random value is stored at this place in memory. If that does not help, replace your mesh with a simple one, like the ShuttlePB.msh. If this...

Detected a large geyser field over a linea on Europa. The plume is big, it extends up to orbital heights. The Obsidian explorer will fly through it and look for traces of life in the water vapor.

    New Release Crew Dragon 2022

Thanks for your endurance to find a way! Tested the new dll, retracting the docking ring both in docked and undocked situation. No more orbit change. Virtual cockpit clickability of buttons works fine. Trunk separation (with ring extended or retracted) also fine, no jump of the separated mesh...

    New Release Crew Dragon 2022

Could you leave the docking ring in place all the time (in relation to the vessel mass center), and just gradually shift the z-offset of the capsule mesh, so the capsule is 'moving' relative to the ring?

    New Release Crew Dragon 2022

Sorry, but I get orbit lowering when the docking ring was extended or retracted and Dragon was docked to another vessel. Dragon orientation was retrograde. Both extending or retracting the ring lowered the orbit. I also tested the version from Orbiter Downloads (241113). Same result. Both...

    Tutorial Trusses and Textures

Textures I use several metal textures, like shown above. A good website for free textures is Freepick. Feel free to explore there and find your own textures. To get a realistic effect, the underlying material needs to match. It has a color and reflectiveness. For the shiny aluminum texture I...

Example 3-sided truss of the Obsidian surveyor. 4-sided truss from the Project Delta-V Novel. This one actually has criss-crossed struts, as the ship in the book has them.

    Tutorial Trusses and Textures

As the question was raised how to make effective pylon structures, I share my method here. Goal is to a make a realistic-looking truss with a low number of polys. I suggest to get familiar with the major components of a framework. It starts with a planning phase: How long will the truss be...

Hubbles Constant (Ho) fixed to light speed, C and calculated as 71 k/s/Mpc

Thanks for pointing to the definition of the Hubble constant! I basically knew what it is, but had no idea how it was defined, and how it is in relation to natural constants, like the speed of light. One small remark: Maybe it its better to write kilometers as km (not only k), so the dimension...
