1957... 1958... 1959... 1966... Just spelling out these numbers sends goosebumps down the spine of every space enthusiast. The whole universe lies out there - virgin, untouched, waiting for the first visitors... And the visitors finally came - in flocks!

Most of the first discoveries during this fantastic period were accomplished by a country, that is not on the globe anymore. Soviet Union started the Space Race with the launch of the planet's first satellite, and, in the following decade, had scored quite an impressive list of 'firsts' in the race, forcing the USA to take space flights seriously

Many of Soviet Union's historical space achivements are recreated in this "educational" addon, which consolidates under one roof three separate addons released in prior years:

- "R-7 Early Missions",
- "Vostok-Luna"
- "Molniya Rocket"

All vessels are heavily reworked with new VesselM library, upgraded for Orbiter 2010 and optimized for DXD9 graphical client. For more authentic visuals, all supplied scenarios are placed in decorations of the new "Spaceports" addon.

Welcome to the history!

Beautiful. It is great to hear the beep sound of the sputnik. Thank you.
:hailprobe:

Is this too bright or OK? My ambient light level is zero.

Some elements may be somewhat bright, but it is hard to adjust to all elements to be equally god and balanced. When you stand in the spotlights on a dark night, many things will look super-bright in real conditions.

It is actually possible to try to tweak the lights (and many other features and visual effects) in the config files, without recompiling the addon. But that road is only for very experienced and adventurous users, mostly developers (because at this moment theses files are very poorly documented).

Hello everyone !

Thanx for these wonderful add-ons... but i have a realy strange problem with it !

When i try to launch the R7 rocket (same thing with R9) with the test scenario, the countdown begins, the table turns well, the arms open, and when the engines ignites, the tile (yes, the TILE !) falls under the ground with the launchpad and the rocket, and when the countdown comes to zero, the rocket explodes... in the sky...

I've never see things like that, and i've tested a lot of add-ons. I've read the doc, the required add-ons are intalled, i've rebooted my PC, i realy don't understand. I've no doubt about the quality of the add-on, i think i can say that i know Orbiter as i play it since 2010... This is the strangest thing i've seen in Orbiter...

1st idea : i'm a noob. Probability superior than 0.
2nd idea : i'm French, and there's something i did'nt understand in the docs.
3rd idea : i use JSGME, and the Orbiter i use is not exactly clean :hmm: Interesting because i've perhaps found a conflict between add-ons
4th idea : i didn't hailed the Probe enough

I'll test the addons on a fresh orbiter installation, and give you the feedback asap. If i can't manage to make this wonderful thing work, i'll kill my dog. Someone must pay.

---------- Post added at 10:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:04 PM ----------

My dog will live.

Everything seems to work fine on a fresh install, using JSGME. But i'm curious and i'd like to know how a tile can fall under the ground.

Again, thanx for this beautyful add-on !

US missed out on having the first man in space do to a series of mishaps

First attempt to launch an unmanned Mercury capsule using a Redstone booster
failed in farcically on November 19, 1960

The booster ignited normally then as started to liftoff then shutdown after
reaching a altitude of 4 inches (10 cm) - a control and electrical cable
separated prematurely triggering abort sequence

The escape tower jettisoned itself, the parachutes deployed. The lauch crew was trapped in the blockhouse waiting for the battery to die and LOX to boil off

Month later flight took place on December 21, 1960 using diffferent booster

Second test flight with chimp HAM took place on January 31, 1961
This booster had a "hot engine" - servo valve controlling H2O2 to steam
generator admitted too much peroxide causing overspeed of turbo pump
feeding fuel to engine. Booster cut off several seconds early triggering abort
Escape tower blasted capsule off booster. As part of abort, the retro pack was jettisoned preventing capusle from slowing down . HAM had a rough ride enduring up to 17 G as capsule overshot landing area.

As consequence of this Von Braum insisted on additional test flight designated
MR-2BD (Mercury Redstone Booster Development)

A boiler plate capsule was fired off on March 24, 1961 to test "fixes" for the earlier problems

If not for the occurances Aalan Shepard would have flew several months before first flight on May 5, 1961

Thank you. :salute:

Two things I was really happy to see working that were not in the old add-ons:

1) Luna-1 sodium cloud

2) The problem I posted here is no longer an issue: http://www.orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?p=467393&postcount=2

Block L put Molniya apogee in the correct hemisphere. BTW, the final inclination of the Molniya Orbit seems a bit too much (was ~69 in the sim, while "classic" Molniya orbit is ~63.4, I think), and the period seems a bit off.

Are the final Molniya orbits historical, or general?

Do I go to the Mission.cfg file if I want to change the launch inclination?

Of course, a glitch like that could not escape the testing. So it was surely an Orbiter configuration problem, question is which one. I'd suspect stale version of D3D9 - versions earlier than 15 had problems with complex animations, and "tile" (which is really just a big mesh) can be theoretically "sent underground" by misapplied animation at the right moment of the launch sequence... that's my best guess.

boogabooga - yes, I tried where possible to improve stuff, rather than just repeat. I also got rid of some not-so-hot features, like "mission success-failure" message.

Molniya orbit is probably set to 69.5 degrees in the Missions.cfg file incorrectly... either I looked up a wrong value somewhere on Internet, or just mistyped it when putting it it. But yes, you can changed in Missions.cfg file yourself, and such a small change should be well within the tolerance of the autopilot.

Thank you for the answer Igel. I'll try to find what's wrong with my "not so clean" install (a lot of add-ons, but i didn't change anything in the Orbiter install), perhaps the info could be interesting for someone. i'll check D3D9 version too.

This is a pure "Chef d'oeuvre" you gave us. Thanx one more time.

I have found that in the "Old" R-7 add-ons, I could get better system performance by manually deleting the KLM generating craft.

Is there a way to stop KLM (Google Earth) recording in this add-on?

Vostok had these sorts of problems and Vostok did not even compete with the Mercury program beacause Vostk managed to get into orbit.

If not for the US being 2nd into space, Neil Armstrong would never have walked on the moon in 1969. At the time of Alan Shepard's first flight, NASA wasn't planning on going anywhere near the moon with a manned mission until the mid 1980's, if ever. JFK changed all that with his single sentence:

"First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth."

That sentence stated clearly a goal (Man landing on moon and returning safely) and a date (before Jan 1, 1970) and he phrased it as a challenge, something the USA needed right then. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Yes.
You are right about JFK but this thread is about Vostok.:tiphat:

Ironically, the addon in this thread does not include Vostok :). But that's technicality, it very likely will - in some future.

boogabooga - KML generation in this addon cannot be disabled. I did not think about that because I did not see any hints of possible performance degradation with D3D9 client - not a single trace yet. I guess this client has huge performance reserves before it can be saturated. And my primary machine is quite old now, with old graphic card and drivers - still, no problems.

Moreover, KML generation is now just a small part of "bigger picture" behind the scenes, where the new "Mission" object tracks all vessels in the scenario for various practical reasons. Accumulating and storing GE tracks does not eat that much processing power.

One possible way to reduce clutter and increase performance is to delete the discardable vessels (stages, skirts, fairings) once they separate and move away far enough. This can be done by adding CLEANUP variable to the Mission object.

Polyot is quite fun. Trying to escape it gives a nice Orbiter experience.
Still no success... :hmm:

Anyway, sounds like fun to try it against Gemini, bringing up some decoys or something.
Lot's of possibilities!

Decoys won't help in current configuration (unless you rename one of the decoys to your Gemini once you deploy it :) ) - chasing is currently done by target's name. Great idea to consider for future, though - to target the brightest thing you can find, that does not have ID responder :)

---------
Actually, when translating the manual, discovered that Polyot locks on target by pure proximity, not by name. Gee, I don't remember how my own addon works :). So, decoy should work OK... if you manage to deploy it in a proper direction!

Yes, it will explode into pieces. It will also destroy the object it strikes. If that object is a third-party vessel, it will be simply 'deleted' from scenario. Whether the third-party vessel can handle such "external deletion" without crashing Orbiter, depends on particular third-party addon, but usually they don't pose any problems.

I am having a problem with the scenario editor and the First in Space Sputniks. I am trying to add the Sputnik 1 vessel into orbit via the scenario editor with the Sputnik 2 scenario. In essence so I can have both Sputnik 1 & 2 in orbit at the same time after the sputnik 2 launches.

So I opened up the Sputnik 2 scenario and added sputnik 1 via the scenario editor. After I have added it and closed the scenario editor, I get an error message when I try to select the Sputnik 1 that I added via Cntl F3. Here are some of the error message details.

Microsoft Assertion c++ debug Library
Debug Assertion Failed
Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\vc\include\vector
Line 779
Expression Vector Subscript out of Range

I tried inserting the stock DG into the Sputnik 2 scenario with all the same parameters and it works fine. So the error seems to be something specific to the sputnik vessel.

Any ideas what is causing the error message?

I think I know what the problem is, but solving it may be not that straightforward...

'First in Space' and 'R-9' addons introduce a special notion of 'Mission' that is not present in the regular Orbiter scenarios. Mission combines a 'loose set of Orbiter vessels' that relate to the same... well, mission, to process and combine data that is common to all of them. This notion is implemented as a separate invisible Mission vessel at the top of scenario. Additionally, all known missions are listed in a special configuration file, referenced by parameter MissionsFile in the Mission.cfg.

When there is a single mission is scenario, everything is simple: all vessels compiled with VesselM library are by default considered part of this single mission. It is also easy to add a regular Orbiter (or any other non-VesselM) vessel, like Deltaglider, to the scenario.

However, when we have two or more missions in the file, or if just other additional VesselM vessels are present in the scenario (and this seems to be exactly what you try to do) - then all vessels for each mission need to be explicitly listed in separate MISSION parameters in the Mission vessel in scenario. For example of that, see multi-rocket scenarios in the R-9 addon. This is rather involving, and easy to screw up with typos... But without that, Mission vessel will add Satellite 1 to the mission of Satellite 2, and then will try to find its data in the Satellite 2 mission record, and will not find it, crash.
